Synopsis
Dans un magasin de chaussures, le vendeur soigne son présentoir. Une dame entre, suivie par sa fille, la vingtaine, à qui elle veut offrir une nouvelle paire de chaussures. En conformité avec l’époque, les deux femmes portent des robes tombant jusqu’au sol et une capeline. La jeune fille choisit un modèle et le vendeur entreprend l’essayage habituel. Tandis qu’il noue le lacet, la jeune fille découvre lentement son mollet. En se relevant, le vendeur embrasse alors à pleine bouche la jeune fille consentante. Furieuse, la mère assaille le vendeur à coups d’ombrelle et quitte le magasin en réprimandant sa fille.Comments

« La caméra, plantée sur un trottoir de New York, filme le va-et-vient des piétons. Le spectateur se demande ce qu’elle guette. Un gamin, posté un peu plus loin, se pose apparemment la même question en espionnant à son tour la caméra. Rien de notable ne se passe, une dame se dirige vers nous, bifurque et traverse, un homme hésite et file, le temps passe… Qui attend-on ainsi, ou quoi ? Enfin, notre curiosité reçoit sa récompense. Au loin, dans la profondeur de champ, un couple jeune et bien mis s’avance. Nous les distinguons des autres passants parce qu’ils ne semblent pas vaquer à leur travail, selon toute apparence, ils sont heureux de vivre et de marcher ensemble. Maintenant, ils passent au-dessus de la bouche d’aération du métro que nous remarquons enfin à quelques mètres de la caméra. Sous le puissant souffle souterrain, la robe de la jeune femme se soulève alors et découvre les mollets et les genoux avant d’être rabattue prestement. » La jeune femme éclate de rire et le couple effectue une sortie de champ.

Brad Hamilton is a popular senior who is looking forward to his last year of school and almost has his 1960 Buick LeSabre paid off. He has a part-time job at a burger joint, "All American Burger" where his girlfriend, Lisa, also works. This esteemed establishment has a strict policy of etiquette: "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Dice". It is the early 1900s. Set in contemporary New York City, Shortbus revolves around Sofia Lin (Sook-Yin Lee), who is married to the handsome but unambitious and slightly dim-witted Rob (Raphael Barker). She works as a couples counselor/sex therapist. She comes into contact with a couple: A slightly egotistical former child star Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and former prostitute James (Paul Dawson), the film's other lead character. At the outset, James suggests to his boyfriend that they open up their relationship to sex with others. During their first consultation, Sofia snaps, slaps Jamie, and then apologetically reveals her "pre-orgasmic" status. The couple suggests she attend a weekly social/artistic/sexual salon in Brooklyn called "Shortbus," which is hosted by drag performance artist Justin Bond (playing himself). Sofia slowly opens up to new experiences; this includes a friendship with a dominatrix who goes by the name Severin (Lindsay Beamish). Sofia's inability to achieve orgasm begins to cause conflict with Rob, who in turn begins attending Shortbus with Sofia.
