The Gilded Cage (French: La Cage Dorée) is a French-Portuguese comedy film released in 2013. It won the "People's Choice Award" at the 26th European Film Awards. It was the film with the most admissions at the Portuguese box office in 2013, with 755 000 and it is the 7th film with most admissions and the 3rd highest-grossing in Portugal since 2004.
The film won the Radio-Canada Audience Award at the 2014 edition of the Cinéfranco film festival.
Synopsis
Maria et José Ribeiro, d'origine portugaise, vivent tranquillement à Paris, où ils ont élevé leurs deux enfants. Elle est concierge dans un immeuble bourgeois tandis que lui est chef de chantier dans une entreprise de construction. Tout le monde abuse de leur trop grande gentillesse. À la suite du décès du frère de José, avec qui ce dernier était fâché depuis longtemps, les époux Ribeiro apprennent qu'ils sont bénéficiaires d'un important héritage, dont une maison au Portugal. Mais il y a une condition dans le testament : s'installer au Portugal pour continuer à faire vivre l'entreprise familiale. Or, pour différentes raisons, certains proches et les employeurs de Maria et José ont tout intérêt à faire en sorte que ceux-ci restent à Paris. Ils vont alors tout imaginer pour les empêcher de partir.Actors

Claude Verneuil, a Gaullist notary, and his wife Marie, a Catholic bourgeois from Chinon, are parents of four daughters: Isabelle, Odile, Ségolène, and Laure. The three eldest are already married to men, each one of a different religion and a different 'ethnic' origin: Isabelle married Rashid Ben Assem, a Muslim Arab, Odile married David Benichou, a Sephardi Jew, and Ségolène married Chao Ling, a Chinese man. The Verneuils pretend to accept their sons-in-laws but have had a hard time hiding their comfortability in accepting people into the family from outside the community. A family meeting is spoiled because of the awkwardness and clichés about race and religion, stated as much by the father as by the sons-in-laws who even exchange insulting communitarist views to and about each other.

Perhan lives with his devoted grandmother Khaditza, his lame sister Danira and his dissolute uncle Merdzan. He wants to marry a girl named Azra, but her mother won't allow it, as Perhan is the illegitimate son of a Slovenian soldier who had an affair with Perhan's late mother. Ahmed, the "Gypsy sheik," comes to the village with his brothers. Merdzan loses his clothes playing cards with Ahmed's brothers, and comes home desperate for money so that he can repay. It is raining and not finding any money, he accuses the grandmother of hiding the money from him and lifts the frame of the house up (using a rope and a truck), so that it is suspended in mid-air as the rain comes down on Perhan, his grandmother and Danira. Very soon after, Khaditza is summoned to use her powers to save Ahmed's sick son, Roberto, which Khaditza does. For repayment, she proposes a deal with Ahmed - to pay for Danira's leg to be healed at a hospital in Ljubljana. Perhan goes with Danira, promising his grandmother not to leave her, but Ahmed asks where will he stay and convinces him to go to Milan. At first Perhan wants to make money honestly, but after being dragged through the mud, Perhan begins stealing and squirreling money away in a shack.

Jesminder "Jess" Bhamra is the 18-year-old daughter of Punjabi Sikh Indians from Hounslow in west London. Jess is infatuated with football but her parents have forbidden her to play because she is a girl. She plays in the park sometimes with her good friend Tony, and his buddies, where her skills draw the attention of Juliette "Jules" Paxton, who plays for the women's team of the local club, the fictional Hounslow Harriers. Their coach, Joe, is impressed with her play and puts her on the team. Jess pretends to have a job to play with the team and Jules and Jess become best friends, despite the fact that both are attracted to Joe. Jess enlists her sister Pinky to cover for her when the team travels to Germany for a big match, but everything unravels when Jules spies Joe and Jess almost kiss, causing a breach between them, and Jess's parents find out and forbid her to continue. Meanwhile, Jules's mother wrongly thinks Jules is a lesbian and the girls' spat is a lovers' quarrel. Jess's parents are confronted by a similar accusation before Jess reveals the truth about her attraction to Joe. While the elder Bhamras are distracted by the elaborate preparations for Pinky's upcoming wedding, Jess continues to play and the Hounslow Harriers make their way towards the top of the league. Joe encourages Jess to come clean with her parents and eventually approaches Mr. Bhamra to explain she has a chance to win a prestigious scholarship, but Mr. Bhamra refuses to believe it. Jess and Jules must sort their differences, make peace with their parents, and overcome cultural prejudice to win the league championship, and earn scholarships to Santa Clara University in California.

The film's plot focuses on an African teenager named James (Siyabonga Melongisi Shibe) whom hails from the fictional African village Entshongweni, who goes on a pilgrimage journey, on behalf of his village, towards the Holy Land, Israel, and especially in order to come to Jerusalem.
