Après s'être fait tabasser dans un bar, Mark Hogancamp est resté plusieurs jours dans le coma. À son réveil, il est frappé d'amnésie. Il va alors se créer un monde imaginaire, Marwen, un village belge fictif durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La création de ce village en miniature devient une obsession. Comme une auto-thérapie, Mark invente des lieux imaginaires qu'il peuple avec des poupées représentant principalement des femmes de son entourage et de son passé. Dans ce monde imaginaire, son alter ego Captain Hogie côtoie ainsi la sorcière belge Deja Thoris, GI Julie ou encore Caralala. Tout cela lui redonne la force physique et mentale nécessaire pour le retour à la réalité : Mark doit se rendre au procès de ses agresseurs.

In 1982, Ari Folman was a nineteen-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find that he remembers nothing from that period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the reality of which he is unable to clearly recall. In his memory, he and his soldier comrades are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut under the light of flares descending over the city.

Oseam follows two orphans, Gami (감이) and her younger brother Gilson (길손). Gami is a gentle and reserved blind girl, while Gilson is hyperactive and often gets into mischief. Kayley dreams of becoming a knight like her father Lionel, who journeys to Camelot to meet with King Arthur as a knight of the Round Table. Ten years later, a griffin attacks the kingdom, stealing Excalibur. Merlin's falcon, Ayden forces the griffin to release Excalibur and it falls into the dark forest. Word is soon sent of the missing sword, falling on the ears of Kayley. Still aspiring to become a knight, she vows to find Excalibur, but her mother Juliana forbids it. Ruber pays them a visit and forces Juliana to agree to give him and his men safe passage into Camelot as part of a plan to take control. Kayley escapes and enters the forest, losing Ruber's men and encountering Garrett; a blind hermit who is assisted by Ayden. He decides to go after the sword, but Kayley insists on following him to his chagrin, as he works better on his own.
