The Hour of the Furnaces (Spanish: La hora de los hornos) is a 1968 film directed by Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas. 'The paradigm of revolutionary activist cinema', it addresses the politics of the 'Third worldist' films and Latin-American manifesto of the late 1960s.

Synopsis

Trois parties composent cette vaste fresque défendant une idéologie de type révolutionnaire. Dans la première, Néocolonialisme et violence (95 minutes), sont exposées les causes du mal : la dépendance et l'état de sous-développement des économies nationales latino-américaines sources de misère sociale et d'indigence culturelle des peuples d'Amérique latine. Le deuxième volet, Acte pour la libération (120 minutes), évoque la prise de conscience progressive des peuples confrontés à cette situation et le troisième volet, Violence et libération (45 minutes), explore l'univers des guérillas d'Amérique latine, à travers, principalement, le témoignage de combattants et l'exemple d'Ernesto Che Guevara.

After the fall of the military dictatorship in 1983, successive democratic governments launched a series of reforms purporting to turn Argentina into the world's most liberal and prosperous economy. Floreal is released from prison prior to the end of a military coup d'état in 1983. He discovers his wife has cheated on him and is not sure he wants to return to his former life and family. A friend, "El-Negro", who was killed during the military coup, appears in the night with a special mission: to help Floreal face what has happened when he was serving time in prison. El-Negro helps him to live through the important events that happened in his absence. El-Negro helps him get past his anger, understanding how hard it was to endure such a difficult time and how the military coup had crushed people's lives. When El-Negro finally tells him he must return, Floreal realizes he must be strong and, like his coup-stricken country, pick up and go on with his life.
