Tourné sur Spinalonga, au sein même de la léproserie, avec, en plus des acteurs jouant l'histoire d'amour du scénario, de véritables patients et de véritables médecins. L'effet moral du film fut tel qu'il entraîna la fermeture de la léproserie. Le film fut cependant assez mal reçu et la réalisatrice en souffrit. Elle raconta l'année qui suivit la sortie du film dans son film suivant, intitulé Aux Portes de l'Enfer.

Haralabos Lardis (Orestis Makris) is a poor cobbler in Plaka that has become a drunkard and the laughing stock of his neighborhood after the death of his son during the Greco-Italian War. His daughter Anna (Billy Konstadopoulou) falls in love with the son of her boss Alec Bakas (Dimitris Horn) and they plan to marry. Her father attempts to overcome his addiction not wanting to embarrass himself in front of the rich family of his future son in law but gets drunk before meeting the Bakas family. Realizing that he is an obstacle to his daughter's happiness he commits suicide bringing the two families closer.

An honest, religious engraver, Anargyros Loumbardopoulos (Vassilis Logothetidis), has routinely invested his money in gold coins, specifically British gold sovereigns, bought from a friend of his, a banker. Upon having stored away 100 sovereigns, a friend of the banker suggests that Anargyros mints counterfeit sovereigns, but he adamantly refuses. The banker's friend then introduces Anargyros to a lady that he knows. Anargyros' resistance is soon curbed, and he spends all his invested 100 sovereigns to buy minting equipment.

Dans l'Athènes des années 1950, M. Anestis, un cocher subit de plein fouet la concurrence des automobiles. Il refuse cependant de changer de métier. Il vit avec Annoula, une orpheline qui devrait épouser son fils Nikos. Cependant, ce dernier a émigré pour trouver du travail. Le vieil homme et la jeune femme partage leur misère et leur tristesse. M. Anestis est obligé à vendre son fiacre. Cela lui fend le cœur. Il survit en vendant des cigarettes à la sauvette dans les rues de la capitale. Il est finalement terrassé par une crise cardiaque en pleine rue. De retour, Nikos épouse Annoula. Leur première visite est pour la tombe du vieil homme mort de chagrin.

M. Agathoklis (Oréstis Makrís) est un cafetier râleur de Plaka, célibataire endurci. Son attitude est telle qu'il fait même fuir ses habitués.
