Synopsis
Un haut fonctionnaire de la cour impériale rentre pour annoncer à sa femme qu'il compte marier leur fille unique, Chu Ying-tai, à un des héritiers de la famille Ma. Afin d'assurer ce mariage, il fait passer à cette dernière un examen sur l'art, mais il comprend très vite que sa fille est incapable de jouer de la lyre, de rédiger ou de réciter un poème. La mère de Ying-tai décide alors de l'envoyer au collège Sung Yee afin de parfaire son éducation, pendant trois ans, mais pour ce faire, la fille doit se travestir en garçon pour apprendre dans ce collège non-mixte. Après avoir été reçue par la directrice de l'école, elle rejoint la bibliothèque, où elle s'apprête à dormir mais elle fait la rencontre du jeune Liang Shan-po qui ignore que Ying-tai est une fille.Actors

In the mid-17th century, the Manchus conquer the territories of the former Ming Empire and establish the Qing Empire. Ning Choi-san is a timid debt collector whose job requires him to travel to rural areas. He arrives at a town but is forced to seek shelter in a deserted temple in the forest on the outskirts because he ran out of money due to his inability to collect the debts as initially planned. That night in the temple, Ning meets a beautiful and alluring young maiden called Nip Siu-sin and falls in love with her. However, when he later recalls that night's events the next day, he becomes increasingly fearful and superstitious because a Taoist mystic told him that the people he saw at the temple were ghosts. In Monte Athena, in the Kingdom of Italy, young lovers Lysander (Dominic West) and Hermia (Anna Friel) are forbidden to marry by her father Egeus (Bernard Hill), who has promised Hermia to Demetrius (Christian Bale). Lysander and Hermia makes plans to flee to the forest to escape the arrangement. Demetrius follows them, having been made aware of the plan by Helena (Calista Flockhart), a young woman who is desperately in love with him. Once in the forest, they wander into the fairy world, ruled by Oberon (Rupert Everett) and Titania (Michelle Pfeiffer), King and Queen of the fairies. Oberon and his servant sprite Puck (Stanley Tucci) cause mayhem among the lovers with a magic potion that causes both Lysander and Demetrius to fall in love with Helena, leading to a rift between all four that culminates (famously in this adaptation) in a mud-wrestling scene. Oberon then bewitches Titania with the same potion.
