The two meet often thereafter, with Gloria reading to him and taking him on wheelchair outings. Gloria falls in love with him. Judge Malvin, who loves Gloria, tries to dissuade her, calling the soldier a "blind wreck." When Larry's finances get low, Gloria takes some songs he has written to a music publisher, and, being a cabaret singer, performs them at the Palm Garden club. The songs are a hit, and Larry signs a contract with the publisher. Instead of a mansion with the judge, Gloria ends up living in a boarding house with Larry, but they are happy. Clive dies and the Cub (Reed), now a young lady, learns who her mother was. Lord Maudsley (Foxe), Clive's son, is in financial difficulty. He makes the Cub believe that dead benefactor has left large debts, and persuades her to reopen her mother's establishment to obtain the money. She does, and the former admirers of the Black Panther marvel at the way she has retained her youth. Eventually the Cub meets her mother (Reed), now an old woman, in a dive to which the Cub has fled with an admirer to get away from the man she loved, but feared to face in her new existence. The place is raided and the mother is shot. Later Maudsley admits that it was he who needed the money, and the lover forgives the Cub and they are happy together. As the women head into the woods Sir Kenneth one of Mary's close male friends follows them dressed as a gypsy. Jack Hutton a wealthy landowner wants the gypsies off his land and has Sir Kenneth jailed. Hutton then seeks out Mary's camp, not knowing her true identity, and wants her thrown off the land as well but then catches her swimming in a moonlit pond. Hutton falls in love with Mary and Mary asks him to dine. When Hutton leaves a band of gypsies attacks Mary's wagon and tie her up. Jack then tries to rescue Mary but is beaten by the gypsies. Sir Kenneth has by then been released from jail and arrives with Peggy, the two of them are now in love. After they cut Mary loose, Sir Kenneth and Peggy head off to be married leaving Mary to care for Hutton. As Hutton recuperates Mary tells him the truth that she is an heiress and not a gypsy as she had led Hutton to believe. They are later married. Wyndham StandingAs described in a film magazine review, Ruth Minchin is unhappily married to her father's business partner Gabriel, who is a drunken brute. She starts a friendship with Severino, a pianist who lives in the same apartment building. Her husband discovers them together, orders Severino from the room, and strikes his wife down. Severino kills Gabriel while in a delirium following pneumonia, and Ruth is suspected of the crime. She is befriended by Richard Steel, who knew her husband from their time in Australia. However, Richard is also suspected of the crime, and she cannot marry the man who may have killed her husband. She later recalls the confrontation when she had been with Severino, and under pressure the pianist confesses to the crime, solving the mystery and leaving Ruth Richard on the road to happiness.
