Subah Ka Tara ( The Morning Star) is a 1952 Hindi social romantic film directed by V. Shantaram. The film was produced by Rajkamal Kalamandir and had story and dialogues by Shams Lucknavi. The director of photography was G. Balkrishna. It had music composed by C. Ramchandra and the lyricists were Noor Lakhnavi and Diwan Sharar. The title song "Chamka Chamka Subah Ka Tara" was one of the notable songs from this film. Rajshree appeared in her debut role as a child star. The cast included Pradeep Kumar, Jayshree, Amirbai Karnataki, Rajshree, Shakuntala Paranjpye and Naaz.

Jayshree plays the role of a young widow pursued by a young man (Pradeep Kumar) who falls in love with her but is unable to marry her due to societal norms and subsequently becomes insane.

Synopsis

The film told in flash-back, starts with a few people troubling a disheveled, insane man holding a bedding. The mad man is Mohan (Pradeep Kumar) who finally sits down with a sympathiser and starts narrating the story. Mohan meets a young widow, Padmini (Jayshree) taking medicine for her dying mother. Padmini's mother, from her death-bed, warns her about befriending young men as she's a widow and society demands that she live alone with just a white sheet as a companion for that's her life as a widow. Following her mother's death Padmini goes to her paternal uncle's house to live. Her uncle has gone to Africa and her Aunt treats her badly. Mohan falls ill thinking about Padmini's situation and her rebuff when he pursues her. He is looked after by his mother and young sister (Baby Rajshree). Padmini is made to work as a maid in her Uncle's house but has a kind cousin sister, Bharti (Chandrakanta). Mohan arrives there on some work and the Aunt has chosen him as a suitable boy for Bharti's marriage. Mohan sees Padmini and tells her how he feels, which is overheard by the Aunt. The Aunt throws Padmini out of the house to fend for herself. The story continues with the problems Padmini faces, Mohan's search for Padmini and her death when she sets the house left by her mother, on fire. Mohan finds the bedding in the aftermath of the fire and goes insane.

Vijay (Jeetendra), son of a poor temple sculptor and a toor guide, was a carefree young lad. Tired of his life Deepak (V. Shantaram), a boat man, tries to commit suicide. However his inner voice stops him. As he's reurning home he gets hit in the eye by a bullet, blinding him. The accident has been caused by Saloni (Jayshree), a young lady also called Chhoti Rani (Young Queen), while she's out on a hunt. She takes him home with the view of getting him treatment. While staying in the big mansion Deepak soon falls in love with Saloni, who reciprocates his feelings. However this is not liked by the older Queen, Badi Rani (Lalita Pawar) as she wants Saloni to marry Vinod. She sends Deepak for eye treatment with Kishori (Sandhya), one of the maids in the house, whose voice is similar to Saloni's voice. Badi Rani dies, and when Saloni refuses to marry Vinod, he tries to rape her. While she's trying to escape, both are killed. On regaining his eyesight Deepak realises that Kishori, who has fallen in love with him is not Saloni. He returns to the mansion to be told about Saloni's death. He spends his days lighting a lamp on the shrine he builds for Saloni at the place where she died.

The story is about a reformist king Kantivarma (Varde) who bans the sacrifice of animals and humans. This angers the fanatical Rajguru (Chandra Mohan), head priest of the Chandika cult. The cult meets secretly and the head priest orders the killing of the king. Yashodharma is chosen and though he hesitates, the priest orders him to do so. Yashodharma writes a note for his son before leaving that night telling him of the deed planned by the Rajguru. After the King is killed, Yashodharma (Kulkarni) is betrayed by the Rajguru in court and ordered to be killed. Yashodharma’s two children, Madhavgupt (Mane) and Sumitra (Shanta Apte), are on the run but Madhav is caught and the letter found on him by one of Rajguru’s men. Sumitra is taken prisoner and Rani Mohini (Nalin Tarkhud) who succeeds to the throne after her father’s death is asked to have Madhav sacrificed in the temple by the Rajguru. There is a storm and Mohini and Madhav escape to the forest. Madhav later goes in search of his sister. Vishwasgupt (Kelkar), a trusted minister tells Mohini and the people of Avanti about Rajguru being the real killer. The temple is thronged by townspeople demanding justice and the Rajguru with his obsessive belief in sacrifices offers himself to the goddess and cuts off his own head as a final sacrifice.
