L'Ile Mysterieuse / La Isla misteriosa y el capitán Nemo / Die Geheimnisvolle Insel (The Mysterious Island) is a 1973 European TV miniseries production (300 minutes) adapted from Jules Verne's novel L'Île mystérieuse. It was later re-edited into a 96 minute motion picture for theatrical release. This version was directed by Juan Antonio Bardem and Henri Colpi and featured Omar Sharif as Captain Nemo.
This TV miniseries turned out to be one of the most remarkable Jules Verne adaptations, remaining unusually faithful to the original book, including the exterior design of the Nautilus.
Deviations from the original book were either limited to budget restrictions or moderate artistic liberty in a constructive sense: While it seems not credible that the Nemo of the book achieved various, physical demanding stunts (considering he was weakened and subsequently dying of old age), Omar Sharif is much younger, relies on what's left of his crew (killed by some kind of disease) and eventually shares the same fate as his alter ego James Mason in the Disney version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
The miniseries featured what may be considered the most beautiful, atmospheric dense Jules Verne imagery ever put on film:
As the settlers lay eyes onto the cave in which the Nautilus harbors, they hear opera music coming from within the Nautilus (due to a cinematograph and a music recording in Nemo's possession).
Synopsis
Tandis que la guerre de Sécession fait rage, cinq hommes se retrouvent derrière les barreaux à Lincoln, et ne doivent leur salut qu'au serviteur émancipé de l'un d'eux, Nab, qui organise une révolte des esclaves pour sauver son maître et ses compagnons d'infortune. Les hommes s'évadent de leur prison grâce à une montgolfière mais une tempête gigantesque éclate alors qu'ils sont en vol. Après avoir parcouru des distances inouïes, la toile se déchire, le ballon perd de l'altitude, et ils risquent de s'abîmer en mer. Le délestage ne sert plus à éviter la catastrophe. Ahmad ibn Fadlan is a court poet to the Caliph of Baghdad, until his amorous encounter with the wife of an influential noble gets him exiled as an "ambassador" to Northern Barbarians. Traveling with Melchisidek, his caravan is saved from Turkic raiders by the appearance of Norsemen (presumably Varangian). Taking refuge at their settlement on the Volga river, communications are established through Melchisidek and Herger, a Norseman who speaks Latin. Ahmad and Melchisidek are in time to witness a fight, which establishes Buliwyf as heir apparent, followed by the Viking funeral of their dead king, cremated together with a young woman who agreed to accompany him to Valhalla.

On a volcanic island near the kingdom of Hetvia rules Count Dakkar, a benevolent leader and scientist who has eliminated class distinction among the island's inhabitants. Dakkar, his daughter Sonia and her fiance, engineer Nicolai Roget have designed a submarine which Roget pilots on its initial voyage just before the island is overrun by Baron Falon, despotic ruler of Hetvia. In 1865 during the American Civil War, a massive storm sweeps through a Confederate prison camp. Union soldiers Cyrus Harding (Michael Craig), Herbert Brown (Michael Callan) and Neb (Dan Jackson), are planning an escape via a tethered gas balloon. When a new prisoner, Union war correspondent Gideon Spillet (Gary Merrill), is brought into their cell, they knock out the guard and escape from the prison house. Once they arrive at the balloon, they drag one of the Confederate guards named Pencroft (Percy Herbert) aboard. After he explains that he knows how to pilot the balloon, they let him join the group.

A strange giant "sea creature" has been rampaging the seas. The American naval ship Abraham Lincoln is sent to investigate, but is rammed by "the creature" which turns out to be The Nautilus, the fantastic submarine of the enigmatic Captain Nemo, and "Rudderless, the 'Abraham Lincoln' drifts on". Then, in "A strange rescue" he guides the sub to surface under those pitched overboard and his crew take them, including Professor Aronnax, and his daughter (who are French) below through a hatch in the surface of the deck. After they pledge not to escape, Nemo shows them the wonders of the underwater world, and even takes them hunting on the sea floor.

It has been four years since the events of the first movie. Seventeen-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) is caught by the police after a brief chase on his dirtbike which ended with him driving into a swimming pool while trying to evade them. Minutes later, his stepfather Hank (Dwayne Johnson) arrives where a police officer (Stephen Caudill) who is friends with Hank tells him that Sean had broken into a remote satellite research center. The police officer also tells Hank that he has talked Mr. and Mrs. McGillicutty (the owners of the swimming pool) out of pressing charges. Hank takes Sean home where his mother Elizabeth (Kristin Davis) is not pleased with his actions or the fact that he and Hank don't get along well.

During the siege of Richmond, Virginia, in the American Civil War, POW Capt. Cyrus Harding escapes from his Confederate captors in a rather unusual way – by hijacking an observation balloon. In his escape, Harding is accompanied by sailor Pencroft, his nephew Bert, writer Gideon, loyal soldier Neb, and a dog. A hurricane blows the balloon off course, and the group eventually crash-lands on a cliff-bound, volcanic, uncharted (and fictitious) island, located in the South Pacific, with very unusual inhabitants.
