In 1815, convict Jean Valjean is released on parole by prison guard Javert after serving a nineteen-year sentence for stealing a loaf of bread and numerous escape attempts. Valjean is refused employment due to his paroled status. He is offered food and shelter by the Bishop of Digne, but Valjean steals his silver during the night. When he is captured by the constables, the Bishop tells them that the silver was given as a gift, securing Valjean's release. The Bishop urges Valjean to do something worthwhile with his life. Moved by the Bishop's grace, Valjean breaks his parole and vows to start a new life under a new identity.

Ian Curtis (Sam Riley) and Debbie Woodruff (Samantha Morton) marry in 1975 in their home town of Macclesfield at ages 19 and 18, respectively. Ian retreats from domestic life, preferring to write poetry in solitude. On June 4, 1976 they attend a Sex Pistols concert with Bernard Sumner (James Anthony Pearson), Peter Hook (Joe Anderson), and Terry Mason (Andrew Sheridan), who are starting a band. Mesmerized by the concert, Ian volunteers to be their singer. They name themselves Warsaw, and Terry moves into a managerial role with the addition of drummer Stephen Morris (Harry Treadaway). The band debuts 19 May 1977 and soon rename themselves Joy Division. Ian and Debbie finance their first EP, An Ideal for Living (1978).

The director of an asylum offers to the serial killer Molly Keller a chance to be submitted to a pilot unconventional experiment in Prague, in the Weisser Institute. Molly accepts, and she travels to the clinic, where Dr. Samuel Wiesser developed a treatment using a virtual world, and Molly and deranged youngsters would be trial subjects. However, something does not work well in the experiment, and when the patients die in their trip, the same happens in the real world. Celle-ci, qu'ils ne tardent pas à surnommer "Folcoche" (association de "folle" et de "cochonne"), n'hésite pas à mal les nourrir ou leur planter sa fourchette dans la main. Elle agit sur eux avec sadisme, force et autorité tout en privilégiant son troisième fils, Marcel, né en Indochine. Elle ira même jusqu'à vouloir faire croire à un vol de 1000 francs, cachés dans une planque du plancher de son second fils pour justifier de le faire envoyer en maison de redressement. Après leur avoir fait visiter la maison de redressement dans laquelle officiait le précepteur remplaçant celui qu'elle avait congédié quelques jours avant ; son comportement odieux trouvera son explication et sa justification, vers la fin du film lorsqu'elle reviendra mourir chez Jean, après que celui-ci eut compris que cette femme avait été terriblement marquée par son éducation chez ses propres parents.
