The Mysterious X (Danish: Det hemmelighedsfulde X) is a 1914 Danish silent drama film directed by Benjamin Christensen. It was Christensen's directorial debut. Prints of the film exist in the Det Danske Filminstitut and the Museum of Modern Art.

Synopsis

Un officier de marine est accusé à tort d'espionnage, et celui qui l'a fait accuser tente de faire chanter sa femme.

As described in a film magazine review, Sebastian Dore (Dearholt) is mysteriously murdered in front of his home, and his beautiful wife Liane (Kane) vows revenge on the murderer. To this end she becomes a German spy for Karl, Prince von Kondermarck (MacLean), but the two fall in love. At the outbreak of war Karl is called to Germany, and Liane opens her home to wounded French soldiers. She accidentally learns that Karl is the murderer of her husband and plans to turn him over to the police. Before he leaves, Karl produces letters showing that Sebastian had betrayed his sister, and explains that Sebastian was accidentally shot in a struggle. Liane and Karl escape together on his yacht.

Joseph Rearden, a British Intelligence agent, arrives in London and makes a rendezvous with MacKintosh, the head of his organisation, in a discreet office located just off Trafalgar Square. MacKintosh and his deputy, Mrs Smith, inform him of a simple way to steal diamonds which are transported via the post service to avoid attention. This he does, apparently getting successfully away after punching a postman, and making off with the diamond-filled parcel. However, that evening, in his hotel room he is paid a visit by two Metropolitan Police detectives who have received an anonymous phone call advising them about the robbery. They are unconvinced by Rearden's pretence to be an innocent Australian who had recently arrived in London.

Former East German engineer Erich Becker had been lured to West Germany by promises of a high reward. Now residing in Stockholm, he is recalled to serve as a spy in the East. He is to convince Dr. Jadenburg to flee from the GDR with the help of his daughter Hanna, who works for the West. While travelling on the train with Hanna, he is told that he is also to murder another agent who betrayed and now works for the Stasi. The traitor is revealed to be a former friend of Becker, Harry Korb. Becker cannot bring himself to kill Korb when they meet. Korb tells him that it was all a test to prove if he is reliable; since Becker failed, Korb murders him. The Stasi agents capture Korb soon after.

Harry (Sam Douglas), a British arms dealer, is seen in bed with a prostitute named Rena (Shivani Ghai). While toying with Harry's pistol, she unloads it but replaces the magazine. Harry's bodyguard Ewan (Sean Bean), is a British Secret Service Agent. Harry and Ewan travel to a bank, transporting a briefcase of Semtex. The men are followed by two terrorists, Ash (Abhin Galeya) and Ibrahim (Mens-Sana Tamakloe). Ibrahim approaches Harry and Ewan from the top of a staircase, shooting at them. After Ewan is shot by Ash twice, Harry tries to shoot Ash, only to discover there are no bullets in his gun. Ash then kills Harry and takes the briefcase of Semtex. However, Ewan manages to shoot Ash in the arm, but before he can apprehend him Ash returns fire and escapes with the briefcase.

Hamilton Hill rencontre Estelle Redding dans un atelier de réparation de parapluies. Peu après, il la sauve d'une attaque par deux voyous. En fait, Estelle a caché dans le manche de son parasol la formule d'un produit qui pourrait remplacer le charbon. Edward Burnham, un des voyous, dit à Hamilton qu'Estelle est un espionne allemande, mais le jeune homme ne croit pas à cette histoire. Estelle confie le parasol à Hamilton, mais quand Burnham, qui s'avère être le frère d'Estelle, arrive à le récupérer, ils découvrent tous deux que la formule n'y est plus. Deux agents allemands, qui se font passer pour des agents du gouvernement, réussissent presque à obtenir la formule, mais Hamilton, accompagné de Burnham, qui a changé de camp, arrivent à temps pour la sauver. Finalement la formule est transmise au gouvernement américain, et Hamilton et Estelle peuvent penser à des choses plus romantiques.
