Synopsis
Devenu aveugle à la suite d'un accident, un cheminot, chauffeur de locomotive à vapeur, doit s'adapter à sa nouvelle vie de non-voyant, notamment grâce aux soutiens de sa famille et d'autres non-voyants, dont une femme qui tombe sous son charme.Actors

Dans une petite ville de province, Blanche Ferrand, aventurière aux belles manières, espère épouser un riche consul, M. de Laubry, dont la femme est gravement malade. Un soir où elle assiste à un match de boxe, Blanche rencontre Martin Roumagnac, entrepreneur en maçonnerie, qui tombe éperdument amoureux d’elle. The year is 1800, and Britain and France have been at war since 1798, in what later was to be known as the War of the Second Coalition. Gilliatt, a fisherman-turned-smuggler on Guernsey, agrees to transport a beautiful woman, Drouchette, to the French coast. She tells him she hopes to rescue her brother from a French prison. Gilliatt finds himself falling in love and so feels betrayed when he later learns that Drouchette is a countess helping Napoleon plan an invasion of Britain. In reality, however, Drouchette is a British agent working to thwart this invasion. When Gilliatt learns this, he returns to France to rescue her, just as her true purpose has been discovered by the French.

Le capitaine Le Quévic est chargé par les autorités maritimes de Marseille de renflouer l'épave de "La Vénus" qui risque d'obstruer l'entrée du chenal. During the First World War, two French aviators, aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and working-class Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin), embark on a flight to examine the site of a blurred spot on photos from an earlier air reconnaissance mission. They are shot down by a German aviator and aristocrat, Rittmeister von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim). Von Rauffenstein, upon returning to base, sends a subordinate to find out if the aviators are officers and, if so, to invite them to lunch. During the meal, von Rauffenstein and de Boeldieu discover they have mutual acquaintances—a depiction of the familiarity, if not solidarity, within the upper classes that crosses national boundaries.
