Synopsis
Un jeune comte qui se prétend d'origine russe et rentier, en villégiature sur les bords d'un lac (le lieu n'est pas précisé, mais le tournage eut lieu à Évian), tombe amoureux d'une sublime jeune femme, Yvonne, qui est accompagnée de son dogue allemand Oswald et d'un vieil homme excentrique, le docteur Meinthe. Peu à peu, le comte va découvrir la singularité de ces êtres, et recevoir en particulier bien des mises en garde au sujet de la jeune femme qu'il souhaite épouser et emmener en Amérique pour y faire éclater son talent d'actrice. L'homosexualité du vieux médecin, autosurnommé la reine des Belges, est également plusieurs fois évoquée, toujours sous forme insultante.Actors

The plot centres around knifethrower Gabor (Auteuil) and a girl called Adèle (Paradis), who intends to kill herself by jumping from a bridge. Gabor intervenes to prevent the suicide and persuades Adèle to become the target girl in his knifethrowing act. The film then follows their relationship as they travel around Europe with the act. Their companionship and teamwork mean great luck for both of them. Then they get separated and their lives once again become luckless. The film ends on a bridge in Istanbul, this time with her saving him from suicide.

The film begins in a flashback from the titular character, Antoine. We are introduced to his fixation with female hairdressers which began at a young age. The film uses flashbacks throughout and there are frequent parallels drawn with the past. Though Antoine tells Mathilde that 'the past is dead', his life is evidence that on some level the past repeats itself. As a young boy he fantasised about a hairdresser who committed suicide and as a man in his 50s he begins an affair with a hairdresser which ends after ten years in her suicide. However there are differences, Mathilde commits suicide because she is so happy she is afraid of the happiness she has found with Antoine ending.

François (Auteuil) .is a middle-aged, art-dealer Parisian who thinks he has everything. In 1850, on the isolated French island of Saint-Pierre, a murder shocks the natives. Two fishermen are arrested. One of them, Louis Ollivier, dies in custody.
