Trois segments: dans le premier (Il vittimista) un enseignant est obsédé par l'idée de sa femme le trahit. Quand il va à un psy, il lui permet de comprendre que sa peur a à voir avec l'avoir triché sur elle pendant un certain temps. Quand il retourne la maîtresse et avoue à sa femme, elle lui pardonne alors que la maîtresse semble prendre plutôt au sérieux. Dans le second segment (Sadik) une femme a son mari se habiller avec un costume de personnage de bande dessinée. Dans le dernier segment (L'Autostrada del sole) un homme doit passer la nuit dans un hôtel mystérieux à cause de sa voiture tomber en panne.

Luciano Bianchi, un intellectuel de la province italienne, s'installe à Milan avec un but : faire sauter le bâtiment d'une grande entreprise pour venger la mort de 43 mineurs. Mais quand il arrive à la grande ville, il doit faire face à la société de consommation et à la vie trépidante de la grande ville. Il abandonne alors peu à peu son intention initiale. Le film est une analyse satirique des coutumes du miracle économique italien des années 1960 et une description amère de la destruction culturelle apportée par la société de consommation.
