Synopsis

Vétéran de la Guerre de Corée, de retour à Washington après deux ans de captivité dans un camp chinois et une période d'hospitalisation, Alan Eaton pense réintégrer l'institut de sondages qu'il a créé avec son associé Clark Baker. Il apprend sa mort accidentelle, peu après avoir vendu l'entreprise à Jim McGinnis. Joe Stefanos (Paul Valentine) arrives at small, out-of-the-way Bridgeport, California, in search of Jeff Bailey (Mitchum). Jeff is away, off on a picnic with local girl Ann Miller (Virginia Huston). The story takes place in 1903. During a train trip, psychiatrist Dr. Huntington Bailey (George Brent) meets a friendly older lady (Olive Blakeney). She tells him that she is going to visit her brother Nick and his lovely young wife Allida. Once in New York, Bailey hears that his train companion suddenly died. Shortly afterward, he meets the strange couple and becomes suspicious of Nick's treatment of his wife. Nick (Paul Lukas) keeps Allida (Hedy Lamarr), whom he is trying to pass off as crazy, a virtual prisoner in their London town house [a New York brownstone in the film], cutting off all contact with the outside world. Marianne, vedette de music-hall, est sur le point d'épouser le marquis Antoine de Fontaine. Informée par la presse qui rapporte cet événement parisien, une bande de voleurs projette de dérober le somptueux collier de diamants que possède la famille de l'aristocrate, collier qui ne sort du coffre de la banque que lorsque l'héritier du lignage se marie. La bande fait venir d'Angleterre un spécialiste capable d'ouvrir le coffre-fort de la villa. Le soir de la réception, les complices sont sur place : Jean le cambrioleur est introduit dans la villa par le "vicomte", tandis que ses deux aides Bébé et Minus attendent à l'extérieur. Tout se déroule comme prévu, mais quand Marianne et Jean se croisent dans le hall, chacun des deux reconnaît en l'autre un amour de jadis. Tous deux s'échappent alors discrètement de la maison et retournent sur les lieux de leur passé : les quais de la Seine et leur ancien hôtel sis dans l'impasse des Deux-Anges. Alors que Marianne est entre deux hommes, elle ne devine pas que Jean vit un autre dilemme : il est en possession du collier mais il abandonne ses complices. Une fois devant l'hôtel maintenant en ruines, le couple constate qu'il est poursuivi par les gangsters, qui ont compris que Jean est en train de les doubler. Ayant provisoirement échappé à la bande, ils retournent à la villa.

In Vienna, 15-year-old Marie Antoinette (Norma Shearer) is informed by her mother, Empress Marie Therese of Austria (Alma Kruger), that Marie is to marry the future King of France, the Dauphin Louis XVI (Robert Morley).
