The movie was adapted from the 1959 novel Tun-Huang by Yasushi Inoue with the backdrop of the plotline being the Mogao Caves manuscript trove. It was chosen as Best Film at the Japan Academy Prize ceremony.
Synopsis
En 1026, les étudiants de l’ouest de la Chine sont envoyés dans les forces du prince héritier Li Yuanhao de Xi Xia, qui veut contrôler la longueur de la route de la soie. Un élève est Zhao Xingde, qui devient le favori de son commandant, Zhu Wangli. En pillant une forteresse, Xingde découvre Tsurpia, princesse des Ouïghours. Il la cache; ils tombent amoureux. Quand il est envoyé pour étudier Xixian, il laisse Tsurpia aux soins de Zhu, mais revient pour la trouver fiancée à Li. Une tragédie s’ensuit, et Zhu et lui concluent un pacte de vengeance lorsque Li arrive à Dun-Huang, le siège de l’apprentissage et de la culture de la région. Contre toute attente, ils trouvent un moyen surprenant de laisser un monument à leur vie et à leur amour.Actors

A young black man (Joe Yamanaka) from New York receives a sum of money. He buys new clothes and takes a flight to Japan. After he arrives, he is found fatally stabbed in a lift in a Tokyo hotel at the same time as a fashion show by designer Kyōko Yasugi (Mariko Okada) is being held. The police department, including Munesue (Yūsaku Matsuda) and his partner (Hajime Hana), come to investigate. The only clue is the dying man's last words "straw hat". At the same time, a woman having an extramarital affair, Naomi (Bunjaku Han), is accidentally run over by Yasugi's son (Kōichi Iwaki). He and his girlfriend dump her body in the sea, but drops his watch at the scene. He is haunted by his actions and confesses to his mother, Kyōko, who suggests he flees to New York with his girlfriend.

The film begins with footage from Asahi Shimbun's special expedition to the Yamato wreckage in 1999, then to a woman, Makiko Uchida, visiting the Yamato Museum in Kure, Hiroshima on 6 April 2005. She is looking for a boat to take her to the site where the Yamato sank, to honor the crew on the 60th anniversary of the ship's last battle. Katsumi Kamio, a survivor who is now a fisherman, agrees to take her after he discovers she was an adopted daughter of Petty Officer First Class Mamoru Uchida, a crewman and close friend who he thought went down with the ship.
