L'État du monde (O Estado do mundo) est un film documentaire portugais collectif réalisé par Chantal Akerman, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Vicente Ferraz, Ayisha Abraham, Wang Bing et Pedro Costa qui portent six regards différents sur l'état du monde.

Il a été présenté lors de la Quinzaine des réalisateurs au Festival de Cannes 2007.

Synopsis

Six réalisateurs, six regards sur l'état du monde. Leur rencontre crée un nouveau prisme de réflexion dynamique et radical, un espace pour interroger l'avenir.

Dans un hôtel surplombant le Mékong, à Nong Khai, dans la frontière entre la Thaïlande et le Laos, le cinéaste Apichatpong Weerasethakul et son équipe travaille sur un film intitulé Ecstasy Garden. Entre documentaire et fiction, nous assistons aux répétitions du film qui raconte la rencontre dans une terrasse d'hôtel au bord du fleuve Mékong entre Phon, une jeune fille, et Tong, un jeune garçon. La jeune fille apprend l'existence d'un "pob", un fantôme cannibale, et que sa mère Tante Jen en est un. La relation avec les deux parentes va peu à peu changer.

Min is an illegal Burmese immigrant living in Thailand who has contracted a mysterious rash that is painful and covers the upper part of his body. His girlfriend, Roong, and an older woman, Orn, take him to see a doctor. Min pretends that he cannot speak because he is not fluent in Thai and speaking would reveal him to be an illegal immigrant. The doctor treats him, however because he does not have proper ID documents, the doctor refuses to supply him with the medical papers necessary to get a work permit. Orn's prescribed medication is also mentioned, and it is unclear whether she is taking pain killers or anti-depressants.
