Vittorio De Sica plays the middle-aged marshal Antonio Carotenuto of the Carabinieri in a remote fictional Italian mountain village named Sagliena (actually the village of Castel San Pietro Romano, in Lazio). Giorgio et Luisa (Virna Lisi) sont de jeunes époux passionnément amoureux.
