The Taste of Tea (茶の味, Cha no Aji) is the third film by Japanese writer and director Katsuhito Ishii. The film has been referred to as a "surreal" version of Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander. It was a selection of the Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis

The film is concerned with the lives of the Haruno family, who live in rural Tochigi Prefecture, the countryside north of Tokyo. Nobuo is a hypnotherapist. He teaches his son, Hajime, Go. Hajime becomes an excellent Go player, but he has a rough time with girls and puberty. Yoshiko refuses to be an average housewife and works on animated film projects at home. She uses assistance from grandfather Akira, an eccentric old man who is a former animator and occasional model.

Partie à la banque vérifier ses économies, Toshiko se retrouve nez à nez avec un braqueur cagoulé... Plus tard, accidentellement, elle percute la voiture de deux hommes qui poursuivaient un des deux braqueurs. Celui-ci se nomme Samehada. Il vient en effet de braquer la banque mais a décidé de ne pas rendre le magot à son patron et s'enfuit au grand désarroi de son complice, Yamada. Samehada se retrouve poursuivi par son ancien complice et ses hommes de main, en compagnie de Toshiko qui elle aussi fuit, non pas des yakuzas mais son oncle obsédé.

Mais Michel et leurs enfants Frédérique et Sophie finiront par découvrir assez vite la réalité, avec ses allers-retours un peu étranges et sa nouvelle voiture dont Michel se demande à quoi elle peut bien lui servir.
