Add to a movie listThe Underworld Story is a 1950 American film noir directed by Cy Endfield and featuring Dan Duryea, Herbert Marshall, and Gale Storm. Howard Da Silva plays the loud-mouthed gangster Carl Durham, one of his last roles before becoming blacklisted.
The newspaperman played by Duryea is similar in tone (a reporter that does anything for publicity for himself regardless of ethics) to Kirk Douglas in Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole (1951). This B-movie was shot in black and white by director Cy Endfield and cinematographer Stanley Cortez.
Synopsis
When newspaper reporter Mike Reese (Duryea) loses his job at a big city paper he finds that no one else will hire him. Reese borrows money from a gangster and buys half the interest in a small-town newspaper, The Lakewood Gazette, in the town of Lakeville. The newspaper is owned by Catherine Harris (Storm), who immediately has differences with Reese on how the paper should operate. Reese, trying to use the paper as a step up, latches onto a murder of a woman who happens to be the daughter-in-law of a newspaper magnate. When a local black woman is suspected, Reese turns the story into a media circus and soon his reporting is back in the spotlight again. The film is notable for the pejorative use of the word "nigger", though this is clearly dubbed, not what was originally filmed.Actors

Howard Tyler (Frank Lovejoy) is a family man, living in California, who can't seem to get by financially. He meets up with a small-time, but charismatic, hood Jerry Slocum (Lloyd Bridges). Soon, Slocum convinces Tyler into participating in gas station robberies to get by. Later, they kidnap a wealthy man in hopes of getting a huge ransom. Things go wrong when the man is murdered by Slocum then thrown in a lake. Tyler reaches his limit emotionally, and he begins drinking heavily. He meets a lonely woman and confesses the crime while drunk. The woman flees and goes to the police.

Alan Curtis (Kennedy), an American real estate agent living in England is dissatisfied with what he believes to be his humdrum life. One weekend while his wife Elizabeth (Shelton) is on a lengthy vacation visiting her mother, he gives a ride to sultry nightclubsinger Lila (Smith) when he finds her stranded on the road. When Curtis gets romantically involved with her Lila tells him that her brother has gotten in trouble over a jewel robbery. In truth, Lila desperately wants the stones for herself. She tricks the wayward Curtis into believing that he killed a man after he buys them two tickets out of the country. He then decides that it is better to face the music, and opts to stay and confess. Lila, too reconsiders, and decides to stay with him until his name is cleared. After the true killers are revealed Lila goes to jail as a participant in the robbery and Curtis returns to his wife, who forgives him.

Tom Yately, just released from prison, is determined to start a new life and he gets a job as a driver at Hawletts, a haulage company that transports loads of ballast gravel from a nearby quarry. The truck-drivers are offered bonuses by the agent Cartley for delivering their loads at dangerously high speeds along narrow roads. Tom is accepted by the other drivers except Red, the foreman and head driver and also a violent bully. Unscrupulous newspaper photographer Jack Early (Duff) is sent to take a picture of racketeer Nick Palmer (Brian Donlevy), who doesn't like to be captured on celluloid. Palmer takes a liking to Early and asks him to frame his henchmen Colton (Tierney). Duff double-crosses Palmer and informes Colton that his boss had planned to frame him. Shortly afterward Palmer is killed by a car bomb and Duff becomes famous for taking a picture of the event. Eventually Duff is himself killed by Colton but he manages to snap a picture of his murderer in the act.

In Chicago in 1932, during Prohibition, a policeman is murdered inside a speakeasy.
