Synopsis
Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, sur une côte du nord de la France, quatre résistants sont arrêtés par des soldats de la Wehrmacht. Ils sont rapidement jugés et condamnés pour être exécutés dans une heure. On suit, en temps réel, leurs derniers moments passés dans la prison qu’ils partagent avec un autre détenu.Actors

In France in 1719, Philippe II, Duke of Orléans is the regent for the young Louis XV. He is sophisticated, gentle, a liberal and a libertine. He endeavours to keep his subjects cultured and happy to stop the peasants from rising up, but he knows he has no real royal authority. To assist him, d'Orléans enlists the aid of an atheistic and venal priest named Guillaume Dubois, who is as much of a libertine as Philippe, and unfortunately does not care for anyone except himself. At the beginning of the movie, a very gruesome scene shows the autopsy of Marie Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans, Duchess of Berry, elder daughter of the Regent. The voluptuous young princess expires on 21 July 1719, her health fatally ruined by her debauched life and a series of clandestine pregnancies. Notoriously promiscuous, Joufflotte ("chubby") as she was nicknamed because of her generous proportions, was rumored of committing incest with her father. The autopsy reveals that the Rubenesque princess was again pregnant. Philippe is very much affected by her death. Meanwhile, a rebellion led by a Breton squire named Pontcallec occurs. Philippe's natural idealism is further shaken when he is forced to execute Pontcallec's band of revolutionaries. Dubois, however, tries to take advantage of the revolt and subsequent famine to become archbishop. It becomes apparent that true joy will only be found when the peasants successfully overthrow the aristocrats who have held them down for so long.

Jo Weisman, a young Jewish Parisian, and his family are taken by the Nazis and Vichy collaborators in the rafle du Vel' d'Hiv. En 1944, à Paris, occupée par l'armée allemande, juste avant que les Alliés débarquent en Normandie. Au quartier général allemand, le général Quade et le Generaloberst von der Heinitz conseillent la situation militaire. Les deux hommes attendent le débarquement allié sur la côte française. Arrive alors le capitaine Fürstenwerth, le neveu de Quade, qui vient du front russe. Quade se confise à son neveu, qui voit aussi le désespoir d'une bataille finale dans le cas d'un débarquement américano-britannique en France. La quatrième personne présente est le major de l'Abwehr, Wedekind, sous le commandement de Quade. Le colonel Toller vient de Berlin pour superviser l'exécution de l'ordre d'Hitler.

Le docteur Leproux est le maire du village de Courdimanche durant l'Occupation. In 1944, art masterpieces stolen by the Wehrmacht from French museums are being shipped to Germany; the officer in charge of the operation, Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), is an ardent art lover and is determined to take the art to Germany, no matter the cost. After the Germans remove the art chosen by Waldheim from the Jeu de Paume Museum, curator Mademoiselle Villard (Suzanne Flon) seeks help from the French Resistance. Given the imminent liberation of Paris by the Allies, they need only delay the train for a few days—still, it is a dangerous operation and it must be done in such a way that does not risk damaging the priceless cargo.
