L'Amour et la Bête (The Wagons Roll at Night) est un film américain de 1941 réalisé par Ray Enright.

Synopsis

Nick Coster (Humphrey Bogart) est le directeur à poigne de son cirque. Un jour, un lion (Caesar) considéré comme dangereux parce qu'imprévisible s'échappe et s'enfuit au village voisin jusque dans l'épicerie de Matt Varney (Eddie Albert) qui arrive à le maîtriser. Nick, devant la popularité que Matt vient d'acquérir auprès des villageois voit tout le bénéfice qu'il peut en tirer pour son cirque. Il annonce à Flo (Sylvia Sidney) la voyante, son amie, qu'il veut proposer à Matt de venir juste saluer les spectateurs dans la cage aux lions les soirs de représentation sous la sécurité de Hoffman the Great (Sig Ruman), le dompteur attitré. Devant l'affluence des spectateurs au fil des soirées, il l'embauche pour apprendre le métier auprès de Hoffman, ivrogne invétéré.

Slim, a farmer from southeastern Ohio, becomes fascinated by a crew of linemen erecting transmission towers across his uncle and aunt's property. He asks Pop (J. Southern girl Mary Carlton finds out that her brother, Bob Carlton, is going to the electric chair for a crime he says he didn't commit. In order to get her brother exonerated, Mary travels to New York and pretends to be a Chicago gun moll. She wins the love of two gangsters, Handsome Joe and Big Steve Drummond. Joe, it turns out, isn't a gangster at all, but an undercover detective. He attempts to help Mary prove her brother's innocence, and the two of them are caught in a fierce gun battle between the crooks and the cops. They make it through alive (although Drummond gets his due), and Bob is released at the last minute.
