The film is the second German movie to portray the Battle of Stalingrad. It was predated by the 1959 Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben (Stalingrad: Dogs, Do You Want to Live Forever?).
Synopsis
In August 1942, a group of German soldiers enjoy leave in Cervo, Liguria, Italy after fighting in North Africa. An awards ceremony is held for several soldiers in the unit, where one platoon's new commander, Leutnant (Lieutenant) Hans von Witzland (Thomas Kretschmann) is introduced. When Unteroffizier (Sergeant) Manfred "Rollo" Rohleder (Jochen Nickel) refuses to button up his collar, his Assault Badge is revoked. Following the assembly, Rohleder, Obergefreiter (Corporal) Fritz Reiser (Dominique Horwitz) and the rest are sent to the Eastern Front to fight for Stalingrad.Actors

In September 1939, Władysław Szpilman (Adrien Brody), a Polish-Jewish pianist, is playing live on the radio in Warsaw when the station is bombed during Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland which caused the outbreak of World War II. Hoping for a quick victory, Szpilman celebrates with his posh family at home when learning that Britain and France have declared war on Germany. German troops soon enter Warsaw and the Nazi authorities implement measures to identify, isolate, financially ruin and reduce the Jewish population in Warsaw. Jews are ordered to provide their own identifying armbands with the Star of David.

The film opens in Japan in the wake of the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami. As emergency personnel work to reach victims trapped underground, one rescuer tries to keep the victims calm by telling the story of how he came to have five fathers, all killed during the Great Patriotic War (WWII). The trapped victims are young German students and the rescuers are Russian.

Trois marins allemands naufragés, le lieutenant Düren, l'enseigne Stahmer et le Maat Hinze, sont sauvés par un sous-marin allemand. Après s'être avérés être les seuls survivants du naufrage du navire de guerre Pommern, ils sont d'abord célébrés en tant que héros et décorés. Cependant un enquêteur note des incohérences dans les rapports des trois et suppose la possibilité qu'ils ont délibérément quitté le navire par intérêt personnel. Un procès est annoncé avec l'accusation de désertion. En raison de cette union personnelle, eux et l'avocat de la défense des trois hommes, inexpérimenté en matière de juridiction militaire, n'obtiennent pas le rejet du procès qu'ils considèrent à charge dans le sens de la dénazification. Au début, les trois affirment leur innocence, mais à mesure qu’ils deviennent de plus en plus incohérents, ils concèdent un à un qu'ils ont quitté le navire prématurément. Ils affirment, en partie fortement émus, que tous leurs camarades étaient morts, rester sur le navire n’aurait entraîné qu'une mort inutile sans bénéfice pour autrui. Tous les trois sont condamnés à mort.

Septembre 1942, au large de Cape Town, en Afrique du Sud. Le "RMS Laconia", qui vient de quitter le port, fait route vers l’Angleterre avec 2 000 passagers à son bord ainsi que 1 800 prisonniers italiens. Les fumées du navire sont bientôt repérées par un U-Boot. Sa taille laissant supposer qu’il peut transporter des troupes, la décision est prise de le torpiller. Cela fait, le sous-marin ne quitte pas immédiatement les lieux. Découvrant le sort des prisonniers italiens, mais aussi de civils, le capitaine, se référant à un code d’honneur maritime, ordonne l’organisation du sauvetage, arbore une croix rouge dans l’attente d’un bâtiment français envoyé par Vichy. Mille personnes seront sauvées. Peu après, ce sous-marin sera coulé par les forces alliées tandis que l’amiral allemand Dönitz signera le "Laconia order" interdisant à l’armée allemande de procéder au moindre sauvetage.

Munich 1942. Le groupe d'étudiants La Rose blanche, parmi lesquels Hans et Sophie Scholl, appellent par des tracts à la résistance à Hitler et son régime. Le tribunal du peuple (Volksgerichtshof) sous la présidence de Roland Freisler les condamne à mort. La sentence est exécutée le 22 février 1943.
