The plot concerns Susan Darell (Joan Fontaine), an actress from New York, who is about to be married, even though they have only known each other for a few weeks. Complications set in when her fiancé Richard Aiken (Walter Abel) gives a party to celebrate. He discovers that Susan has had three previous boyfriends when he sees their pictures in her living room. At the party he talks to the three former beaus of Susan, each of whom describes Susan as an entirely different person. They tell him how they met and fell in love with her. The first one to talk to Richard is Broadway producer Roger Berton (George Brent), who met Susan on a vacation island. He discovered her acting talent and cast her in role in his new production of Joan of Arc. The next beau is Mike Ward (Don DeFore), an industrialist Millionaire, whom he met when making a deal with the producer. He discovered that Susan was too much of a cosmopolitan girl for his taste. The third man was a novelist named Bill Anthony (Dennis O'Keefe), who met Susan in a park. While spending time with Bill, Susan began an intellectual era, but she decides not to go through with their plans to marry, leaving Bill at the altar. The fiancé Richard Aiken hesitates in going through with the wedding because he is not sure just who is the real Susan. All the other three men agree that they still love Susan, and she ultimately chooses the Broadway producer to be her husband.

Liverpudlian working-class young woman – hairdresser – Rita (Julie Walters) wants to better herself by studying literature. Her assigned Open University professor, Frank Bryant (Michael Caine), however, has long ago openly taken to the bottle, and soon develops misgivings about Rita's ability to adapt to student culture. The action takes place in Moscow in 1976. Anatoly Yefremovich Novoseltsev, a clumsy single father of two sons, works at a statistical bureau. His boss is a strict unmarried woman, Ludmila Prokofievna Kalugina, nicknamed "our frump" by her subordinates. She has some self-confidence problems, hidden behind her gloomy humorless demeanor and plain old-fashioned look. Novoseltsev’s colleagues consider him as a smart and experienced worker. He dreams about a promotion and a raise that would help him provide for his children, but he is too timid to talk to his boss about it. His former classmate and old friend, Yuri Grigorievich Samokhvalov, recently appointed assistant manager of the institution, suggests appointing Novoseltsev as a head of the light industry department, but Kalugina rejects it believing that Novoseltsev is not good enough for the position. Then, following Samokhvalov's advice, Novoseltsev unwillingly tries to flirt with "the Frump" at a party in Samokhvalov's apartment in order to "get into contact" with her. Feeling extremely uneasy he tries in vain to make conversation with her - talks about random things such as picking berries and mushrooms, reads poetry, shows off his singing and dancing abilities (in a very comical way), but Kalugina gets annoyed and severely criticizes all his attempts to impress her. Eventually Novoseltsev becomes frustrated, flares up and tells Kalugina right in her face that he considers her dry, inhuman and heartless.

Murphy "Barfi" Johnson (Ranbir Kapoor) is an optimistic, street-wise, charming young man who was born deaf-mute to a Nepali couple in Darjeeling. She also falls in love with Barfi but her mother dissuades her from pursuing him because he could not take care of her with his disabilities and lack of money. Shruti takes her mother's advice, gets married, and moves to Kolkata, breaking all contact with Barfi.
