Dans le village de Segnac quelques personnages pittoresques se côtoient. Gabriel Dautrand un peintre en vacances, O’Hara un vieux capitaine, Blaise d’Orliac un écrivain auteur de romans policiers. Violaine la fille des hôteliers est gravement malade et condamnée. Son entourage veut le lui cacher, mais elle l'apprend en voyant son dossier médical dans le sac à main de sa mère. Blaise et Violaine s'aiment, mais Blaise est marié à Michèle. O’Hara met à la disposition des amants une chambre, mais Michèle l'apprend et se rend sur place. Blaise tue Michèle par accident, alors que Michèle tenait un revolver et que Blaise voulait le lui retirer. O'Hara qui aime platoniquement Violaine et la croyant coupable, modifie la scène de crime, suivi de Violaine qui brouille également les cartes et laisse son médaillon afin de faire croire que c'est elle la coupable. Blaise se dénonce à la gendarmerie, mais O’Hara y est déjà pour endosser le crime. Gabriel Dautrand se révèle en fait être un commissaire. Il finira par connaître la vérité, mais ému par le mensonge d’amour de Violaine en lisant son journal intime, il n'arrêtera pas Blaise. Violaine meurt heureuse.

Helen Norwood est encore étudiante lorsqu'elle rencontre Jim Wyndham, un aviateur en partance pour Ceylan. Paul Linden (David Farrar), a wealthy and prominent architect, returns home to London bringing his new wife, beautiful 24-year-old Nichole (Noelle Adam), whom he has just married in Paris. Paul is anxious to introduce Nichole to his teenage daughter Jennifer (Gillian Hills), but Jennifer appears less than happy about her father's remarriage and coldly rejects all of Nichole's friendly overtures all evening. In late 1944, the Hongerwinter famine is starting to bite in the occupied northern and western Netherlands and Nazi persecution is rife. The farm of Jan Alting (Lovell), a Dutch patriot who has disowned his son for his collaboration with the occupying German forces, is known by the Dutch Resistance as a place of refuge for those who are in danger from the Germans. The beautiful Clarisse learns that she is going blind, and in order to prevent her lover Madére, a boatman, from sacrificing himself for her, she decides to break with him, pretending she no longer loves him. Madère angrily leaves, and Clarisse takes a job as a singer in a harbour bar to support herself and her crippled sister Mireille. When she discovers that she is pregnant, she wants to confess everything to Madère, but he has left on a year-long voyage with a new lover Giselle. Clarisse gives birth to a daughter Violette, and when Madère and Giselle return she learns that they are married and also have a baby daughter. Clarisse's child dies, and she herself becomes completely blind; embittered against men, she withdraws into herself. Mireille tells the truth to Madère, who has separated from Giselle, and he undertakes an elaborate deception to take care of Clarisse, posing as the owner of a yacht on which he wants to take her on a cruise. The yacht is in fact the broken-down boat which used to be their shared home, but all their friends conspire to create the illusion that Clarisse is on a sea voyage. Madère restores the boat in preparation for a real voyage, and just when it is ready, Clarisse tells him she has recognised him and the boat. She accepts his love for her, and simultaneously regains her sight.
