Under Secret Orders, also known as Mademoiselle Doctor, is a 1937 British spy film directed by Edmond T. Gréville and starring Erich von Stroheim, John Loder, Dita Parlo and Claire Luce. It is an English-language version of the French film Mademoiselle Docteur, also known as Salonique, nid d'espions, and released in the United States as Street of Shadows, which was filmed at the same time under the direction of G. W. Pabst. Both films have exactly the same plot, but there were differences in the cast between the two: in particular, von Stroheim was not in the French version.

Synopsis

During the First World War, a female Doctor falls in love with one of her patients who turns out to be a German spy. She herself ends up working for German intelligence.

In late 1944, the Hongerwinter famine is starting to bite in the occupied northern and western Netherlands and Nazi persecution is rife. The farm of Jan Alting (Lovell), a Dutch patriot who has disowned his son for his collaboration with the occupying German forces, is known by the Dutch Resistance as a place of refuge for those who are in danger from the Germans. With the help of his daughter Elly (Carol van Derman), Alting is currently providing shelter for Jewish couple Mark and Mary Meyer (Martin Benson and Agnes Bernelle); van Nespen (Bruce Lester), an aristocrat with active links to the underground movement, and Bakker (Julian Dallas), a Communist wanted by the Germans for sabotage. All are aware of the constant risk of betrayal and exposure.

During the First World War, two French aviators, aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay) and working-class Lieutenant Maréchal (Jean Gabin), embark on a flight to examine the site of a blurred spot on photos from an earlier air reconnaissance mission. They are shot down by a German aviator and aristocrat, Rittmeister von Rauffenstein (Erich von Stroheim). Von Rauffenstein, upon returning to base, sends a subordinate to find out if the aviators are officers and, if so, to invite them to lunch. During the meal, von Rauffenstein and de Boeldieu discover they have mutual acquaintances—a depiction of the familiarity, if not solidarity, within the upper classes that crosses national boundaries.

In 1943, British Intelligence in Cairo recruits criminal mastermind Roberto Rocca (Raf Vallone), demolitions expert and Irish Republican Army member Terence Scanlon (Mickey Rooney), forger Simon Fell (Edd Byrnes), cold-blooded murderer John Durrell (Henry Silva), and thief and impersonator Jean Saval (William Campbell) for a dangerous mission. Dans le village de Segnac quelques personnages pittoresques se côtoient. Gabriel Dautrand un peintre en vacances, O’Hara un vieux capitaine, Blaise d’Orliac un écrivain auteur de romans policiers. Violaine la fille des hôteliers est gravement malade et condamnée. Son entourage veut le lui cacher, mais elle l'apprend en voyant son dossier médical dans le sac à main de sa mère. Blaise et Violaine s'aiment, mais Blaise est marié à Michèle. O’Hara met à la disposition des amants une chambre, mais Michèle l'apprend et se rend sur place. Blaise tue Michèle par accident, alors que Michèle tenait un revolver et que Blaise voulait le lui retirer. O'Hara qui aime platoniquement Violaine et la croyant coupable, modifie la scène de crime, suivi de Violaine qui brouille également les cartes et laisse son médaillon afin de faire croire que c'est elle la coupable. Blaise se dénonce à la gendarmerie, mais O’Hara y est déjà pour endosser le crime. Gabriel Dautrand se révèle en fait être un commissaire. Il finira par connaître la vérité, mais ému par le mensonge d’amour de Violaine en lisant son journal intime, il n'arrêtera pas Blaise. Violaine meurt heureuse.

The story takes place during World War I. The action opens on a French battlefield. After meeting with German spy Schiller Blacher (Erich von Stroheim), Z-1 (Constance Bennett) is sent on a mission to England. The action then moves into the London home of Sir Winston Chamberlain (William Holden- no relation to the 1950s star of the same name). Sir Winston does not know that that his supposedly faithful butler, Vardar, is actually Blacher. When Z-1, as Frances Hawtree, arrives at the home, Vardar, who is in love with her, believes her to be a loyal German agent, but things turn out otherwise when she prevents him from sending a stolen code back to Germany and thus reveals her true allegiance.
