It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film was also selected as the Mexican entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 30th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
Synopsis
Luis Procuna est un grand matador mexicain. Il souhaite se retirer et vivre en toute quiétude auprès de son épouse. Mais le public exige qu'il remonte sur l'arène... Sur le chemin le menant au combat, le torero se souvient des instants passés et confie sa hantise de la mort.Actors

Alors que son grand frère Mokhi refuse de l'emmener au grand jeu de bouzkachi de Kaboul, auquel il va participer pour représenter la province de Kataghan, le jeune Rahim décide de s'y rendre par ses propres moyens. Guidé par l'ange de la mort, Azraël, Rahim parvient difficilement à Kaboul. Là, humilié par un autre cavalier, Ouroz, Rahim ronge la sangle du cheval de ce dernier. Mais c'est Mokhi qui monte le cheval. S'élançant pour le prévenir alors que le jeu a commencé, l'enfant meurt piétiné par les cavaliers, tandis que Mokhi remporte le bouzkachi sans que la sangle n'ait cédé.

Diego Montes (Nacho Martínez) is a bullfighter, forced into early retirement by a goring, and in the opening scene he finds sexual gratification viewing videos of violent death. In retirement he teaches bullfighting, and among his students is Ángel, a diffident young man who suffers from vertigo. During one episode of vertigo in the practice ring, the scene cuts from Ángel to a woman killing a man during sex with a pin she was wearing in her hair, striking at the base of the neck between the shoulder blades, as a matador kills a bull. After class, Diego asks Ángel if he is homosexual, noting that he is not experienced with women. Ángel says he is not and vows to prove himself. Later that day, Ángel attempts to rape Eva (Eva Cobo), a model who is both his neighbour and Diego's girlfriend. As she is leaving him, she trips in the mud and gashes her cheek. At the sight of her blood, Ángel faints.

In 1930, fishermen in the small Catalan port of Esperanza make a grim discovery in their nets, the bodies of a man and a woman. The resultant ringing of church bells in the village brings the local police and the resident archaeologist, Geoffrey Fielding (Harold Warrender), to the beach. Following the plot of the classic opera, "Carmen," this story follows the wild gypsy's adventures as a siren and bandit. Paris, 1922. Jake Barnes vit à Paris depuis sa démobilisation de la guerre 14/18 et il est journaliste au « New York Herald ». Un soir, il se rend à un bal musette où il retrouve des amis dont le romancier Robert Cohn. Arrive Lady Brett Ashley qui n’est pas une inconnue pour Jake. Elle fut son infirmière à l’hôpital pendant la guerre où ils tombèrent amoureux mais à la suite de sa blessure contractée sur le champ de bataille, Jake est devenu impuissant. Depuis, ils entretiennent une amitié amoureuse. Pour tenter d’oublier cette déconvenue Brett multiplie les aventures. Elle a promis d’épouser un Écossais Mike Campbell, joyeux drille plutôt porté sur la bouteille, tout en étant très courtisée notamment par Robert Cohn qui tombe immédiatement fou d’elle. En compagnie de son ancien compagnon d’armes, Bill Gorton, Jake part à Pampelune en Espagne assister aux corridas. À peine arrivé aux fêtes de la San Fermin, Jake a la surprise de retrouver Brett entourée de tous ses prétendants. Le groupe ne se quitte plus, et participe à toutes les festivités : débarquement des taureaux, encierro à travers les rues, corrida… Brett se laisse courtiser par un jeune torero, Pedro Romero, sous le regard furieux de Robert qui finit par agresser le jeune homme. Le lendemain, Pedro triomphe aux arènes et Jake apprend que Brett s’est enfuie en compagnie du torero. Pour Robert et Mike, la fête est finie. C’est à Biarritz que Jake reçoit des nouvelles de Brett, elle lui lance un appel de détresse espérant démarrer une nouvelle vie avec lui.

As a child Juan Gallardo (Rex Downing – young boy) wants only to become a bullfighter like his dead father.
