It was Cao's solo directorial debut, though Cao had previously co-directed the film Absolute Emotion in 2001. Based on Que Diwei's novella, "Village Operation," which was published in a magazine in 2000, Trouble Makers had difficulty traversing the Chinese censors and often found itself lacking funds until 2005. As a result, Cao eventually inserted a happy ending that differed from ending in the original novella.
Synopsis
Trouble Makers tells the story of four simple men living in Black Well Village (in rural Yunnan province) who decide to finally run the criminal Xiong Brothers out of their homes. The Xiongs have managed to build a criminal "empire" in the small town even managing to elect themselves the mayor and official accountant of Black Well Village. Two other brothers enforce the Xiongs' will with violence and intimidation. The brothers, known by the political-infused moniker, the Gang of Four, smuggle salt and generally terrorize the villagers of Black Well.Actors

Li Mi est une jeune chauffeur de taxi à Kunming. Depuis 4 ans, elle est à la recherche de son amour perdu, Fang Wen, qui parti sans laisser de trace, continue de lui envoyer des lettres sans jamais laisser d'adresse. Elle tente de le retrouver en montrant à ses passagers, un magazine où elle y a entreposé toutes les photos de Fang Wen. Un beau jour, elle prend en stop deux passagers aussi louches l'un que l'autre, sans se douter, qu'ils sont en fait des passeurs de drogue. Lorqu'elle s'aperçoit que l'un d'eux est armé, il est déjà trop tard : elle se fait prendre en otage et rentre dans un engrenage infernal... Par chance, elle réussit à s'échapper, et par un concours de circonstances, elle va être appelée à témoigner dans cette affaire de drogue, qui va la remettre étrangement sur les traces de Fang Wen.

Korean gangster Han Ki-Chul (Lee Beom-soo) is put in charge by his Big Boss of looking after Lim Aryong (Shu Qi) who comes from Hong Kong. They expect Lim Aryong to be some big male gangster but she turns out to be a woman and acts very cold toward him and his associates. Moreover none of them speak her language and she doesn't understand Korean. A translator called Yeon-Hee (Hyun Young) arrives. She is immature and very scared of the gangsters so at the beginning, instead of translating Aryong's rather rude answers, she changes them to nice ones. Quickly, Aryong shows her fighting skills beating other bosses to save her companions. Ki-Chul and his associates who are rather unskilled, are impressed and become afraid of her while, upon finding that they are actually nice, she's trying to be more friendly. Her efforts are ruined by Yeon-Hee who, taking advantage of Aryoung's aura, 'translates' very threatening sentences.

Han-na is an overweight phone sex part-timer and a ghost singer for Ammy, a famous pop singer who actually lip syncs. Instead of being famous for her own amazing vocal talent, Han-na sings behind backstage during Ammy's performance and Ammy takes all credits, and records all of Ammy's songs. Other then that, Han-na has a huge crush for Sang-jun who's a director and his arrogant father owns the entertainment company. One day, Ammy purposely insults her in front of Sang-jun during his birthday party, knowing well that Han-na likes him. While crying in the bathroom, Han-na overhears Sang-jun telling Ammy that even though they are just using Han-na for her voice, they must be kind to her so she will not walk out on them. Heartbroken, Han-na attempts suicide with a gas leak but is interrupted by a phone call from one of her phone sex regulars who happens to be a top plastic surgeon. She tries to blackmail him with recorded tapes and later honestly tampers them to convince him about the pain she's holding in her heart about being fat. The surgeon refuses to operate further on Han-na, but Han-na threatens to inform his wife about his secret fascination. Then, Han-na makes a moving speech that she does not want to undergo surgery merely to be beautiful, but for the sake of love and as a vote of confidence so that she can live a happy life, and the surgeon is deeply moved in the end. Han-na puts herself in seclusion for a year as she recovers from the changes.
