Synopsis

Depressed after being abandoned by her young lover, affluent Helene (Annie Giradot) heads off to a health clinic on the coast. In Lagrange, Ohio, Curtis LaForche (Michael Shannon) has apocalyptic dreams, and visual and auditory hallucinations, of rain "like motor oil", swarms of menacing black birds, and being harmed by people close to him; but, he hides all of this from his wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain), and their deaf daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart). He instead channels his anxieties into a compulsive obsession to build a storm shelter in his backyard; however, his increasingly strange behavior -- including a tendency to cut ties with anyone in his life that has harmed him only in his dreams -- strains his relationship with his family, friends, employer, and the close-knit town. Curtis grudgingly sees a counselor at a free clinic, with whom he talks about his family's psychological history (his mother (Kathy Baker) suffers from paranoid schizophrenia that surfaced in her at about the same age that Curtis is now).

C'est leur grand-mère, Irène, épouse de Paul, qui les emmène sans prévenir ce dernier. Dès leur installation, le choc des générations se fait ressentir entre ces ados citadins et connectés, et ce grand-père de prime abord psychorigide et arriéré. Au fil du temps, les petits-enfants découvriront chez leur grand-père, que derrière ce personnage bourru se cache une personne pleine de surprises, ancien hippie et motard ayant parcouru le monde entier avant de se retirer et de cultiver des oliviers. Les vacances ne s'annonceront pas si désastreuses que cela, entre les moments en famille et les rencontres et premières amourettes au village, le pizzaiolo pour la jeune fille, les belles touristes suédoises pour le plus grand. Quant au tout petit, il n'aura d'yeux que pour son grand-père, et ce malgré ses fêlures et son net penchant pour l'alcool.

14-year-old Melinda Sordino (Kristen Stewart) starts out her freshman year in high school struggling on the first day. She doesn't have any friends to hang out with, and appears awkward and uncomfortable when speaking to others. Throughout the day, she is pointed at by many students and is repeatedly called a "squealer". A series of flashbacks reveal that she called the police when at a house party during the previous summer. Her real reason for calling 9-1-1 was that she was raped at the party by a senior student, Andy Evans (Eric Lively), but while on the phone, she was unable to talk to the police about what happened, and when the police arrived, she did not report the rape. The party was crashed, causing mayhem and everyone to flee from the police.

Murphy "Barfi" Johnson (Ranbir Kapoor) is an optimistic, street-wise, charming young man who was born deaf-mute to a Nepali couple in Darjeeling. Barfi meets Shruti Ghosh (Ileana D'Cruz), who has just arrived in Darjeeling; she is engaged to Ranjit Sengupta (Jisshu Sengupta), and is due to get married in three months, and Barfi is immediately smitten with Shruti. She also falls in love with Barfi but her mother dissuades her from pursuing him because he could not take care of her with his disabilities and lack of money. Shruti takes her mother's advice, gets married, and moves to Kolkata, breaking all contact with Barfi.
