Synopsis
Oscar, scénariste, et Arturo, cinéaste, envisagent de réaliser ensemble un film de fiction sur la persistance du machisme à Cuba. Ils choisissent comme terrain de leurs observations le milieu des dockers du port de La Havane. Leur objectif est de mettre en relief le décalage entre la conscience politique et l'attitude réelle des hommes à l'égard des femmes. Au cours de son enquête, Oscar s'éprend d'une employée, Lina, jeune fille-mère, cultivant avec fierté son autonomie. Le ménage d'Oscar se trouve alors menacé. Un autre conflit apparaît entre Oscar et Arturo au sujet du film. Leur projet commun finit par échouer en raison de divergences de conception. De son côté, Lina, en femme libérée, dénonce l'attitude contradictoire d'Oscar, prisonnier de certains comportements qu'il croyait pouvoir critiquer chez les autres. Elle décide, en définitive, de retourner dans sa ville natale, Santiago de Cuba, où elle peut espérer une ascension professionnelle.Actors

Daughters of the Dust is set in 1902 among the members of the Peazant family, Gullah who live at Ibo Landing on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Their ancestors were brought there as slaves centuries ago, and the islanders developed a language and culture that was creolized from West Africans, of Ibo, Yoruba, Kikongo, Mende, and Twi origin. Developed in their relative isolation of large plantations on the islands, the slaves' unique culture and language have endured in areas of the Low Country. The Peazant family, including a couple of contrasting daughters who have come back for a last dinner on the island, is meeting before most leave for the North. The film is narrated by the Unborn Child, and is influenced by accounts of ancestors, represented especially by Nana Peazant, the matriarch. She says, "We are two people in one body. The last of the old and the first of the new." Lyrical visual images convey much of the story. The dialogue is in Gullah creole.

Abigail Scanlon and Parker Wald are best friends since childhood who return to their small hometown of Lambert, Louisiana from New York City for a visit. After running into old friends, they learn that their close friend, Rachel, has lost the love of her life, Tony, to their ex-friend, Caitlin, a conniving gold-digger who pretends to be pregnant to trick Tony into marrying her. Intent upon preventing a loveless marriage, Parker and Abigail go "undercover" as Caitlin's bridesmaids to sabotage the wedding. Along the way, Caitlin's tightly-wound mother, Olivia, works hard to keep Abigail and Parker at bay as Parker falls for the town detective. The bridesmaids put their best-laid plans in motion only to see them go outrageously awry. As a result, the trio are arrested by Henry, but Parker convinces him to release them. So Abigail, Parker, and Rachel sneak into the wedding and kidnap Caitlin. They take her to the hospital for a pregnancy test and trick her into admitting the truth. At the wedding ceremony Tony lies to Caitlin that his family lost their fortunes which leads to her canceling the wedding and storming off. After Caitlin is gone, Tony gets on one knee and proposes to Rachel and reveals that he lied and that he is still rich.

Pooja (Shabana Azmi), who grew up as an orphan girl and always dreamt of owning a house, becomes insecure when she finds out that she and her husband, Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), have to leave the apartment they rent.
