Jack Hearne préfère vivre avec les bohémiens plutôt que de réclamer sa part du domaine de Cragsnest, dont dispose son demi-frère Phillip Royston. Toutefois, après avoir sauvé d'un incendie Ruth Heckett, la fille de son ami Joe, un oiseleur de Londres mais aussi un cambrioleur, il change d'état d'esprit et se marie avec elle. Ruth et Jack embarquent dans un steamer pour l'Amérique pour retrouver des témoins du mariage de ses parents et ainsi prouver son droit à l'héritage, Bos, un des complices de Joe, offre à Ruth une bible qu'il a volée à Cragsnest. Ce qu'ils ne savent pas, c'est que cette bible contient le certificat de mariage des parents de Jack, certificat que Royston recherche lui aussi, mais pour le détruire. Jack est attiré hors du bateau par Laura, une bohémienne sous le charme de Royston, matraqué, drogué, et jeté à l'eau, mais Bos réussit à le sauver. À Southampton, le steamer fait naufrage, ils sauvent Ruth, qui a entre-temps découvert le certificat, et d'autres passagers, pendant que Royston et Laura se noient.

Silent Madden, a criminal leader in San Francisco, and his gangster daughter Molly (Priscilla Dean) have forsaken a life of crime after receiving counsel from Chang Lo, a Confucianist philosopher living in Chinatown. A despicable gangster named Black Mike Sylva (Lon Chaney) frames Molly's father for murder, causing Molly to lose faith in abiding the law and prompting her return to a life of crime. Black Mike plots to double-cross Molly as well during a jewelry theft, but Molly gets word from her gangster lover and foils Black Mike's plans. While hiding out from the law, Molly's hard heart is slowly melted by her gangster lover. The film ends with a climactic shootout.

The Blackbird (Lon Chaney) is a thief who uses a second identity when necessary: a rescue mission keeper with contorted legs, known as his bishop brother The Bishop. He lives above a cheap bar in the Limehouse district, where his alter ego The Bishop is beloved among all guests, unlike The Blackbird himself. In 1757, in the midst of the French and Indian War, three French divisions and their Huron Indian allies are advancing on Fort William Henry, a British stronghold south of Lake George in the colony of New York. Cassie Cook had played the opium selling game until fate and a bad shuffle compelled her to team up with her biggest rival, Jules Repin, and then the horror of the whole thing weighed down upon her and she determined to quit and leave China before it was too late. She had bought a lot of new gowns on credit, believing in Repin's promise that he had a big shipment of opium coming in which would give them both plenty of money. Now those gowns had to be paid for and Cassie's chum, Molly Morton, taken out of the country before a growing taste for opium got a final hold on her. So Cassie bet on a sure thing in the races and lost. "But I'm going to get you out, Kid," she told Molly, and as a last resort she went back to the game. Up in Hang Chow, a trouble-infested village near the poppy fields, she tried to trace the shipment Repin expected. A white man was there — supposed to be opening an abandoned mine. It was her business to find out if he was a government inspector seeking the den of the dope dealers. She posed as a novelist, and he, believing in her, told her that he was there to fight the dope menace. Cassie felt like a cheat of the lowest order and she turned against her comrades, but they, by trickery, found out what she had learned from the mine superintendent. In a flash they set the little world ablaze with rebellion and the soul of Cassie Cook was cleansed in the fires of remorse as she battled for what she believed was the right cause, and out of it came a love that was clean and honorable.
