Hillary Kramer (Streisand), a successful perfume magnate awakes one morning to find that her accountant has robbed her blind and left for South America. In 1890s San Francisco, boxing is illegal. James J. Corbett (Errol Flynn), a brash young bank teller, attends a match with his friend Walter Lowrie (Jack Carson). When a police raid nets Judge Geary, a member of the board of directors of Corbett's bank, Corbett's fast talking gets his superior out of trouble. The judge is looking to improve the image of boxing by recruiting men from more respectable backgrounds and having them fight under the Marquess of Queensberry rules. He has even imported British coach Harry Watson (Rhys Williams) to evaluate prospects. Watson finds that Corbett, raised in a combative Irish immigrant family headed by Pat Corbett (Alan Hale), has excellent fighting skills; Geary likes his protégé's seemingly-polished manner.

Harry Fabian (De Niro) is a fast-talking, two-bit New York lawyer who hangs out at a bar called Boxers, owned by Phil (Gorman) and his wife Helen (Lange). Harry has been having an affair with Helen, who dreams of setting up her own bar and leaving Phil. At the bar, he spots an article in the New York Post about a man who was pummeled by a boxer. He calls the man on Phil's phone and pitches a lawsuit against the boxer on the grounds that his fists are legally considered weapons. The fighter is promoted by Ira "Boom Boom" Grossman (King), who tries to muscle Harry off the idea of suing his boxer. The case is promptly dismissed by the judge, who knows that it is baseless.

James "The Grim Reaper" Roper (Damon Wayans), the undefeated heavyweight boxing champ of the world, defeats his latest challenger with ease and visits an after-party thrown by the Rev. Fred Sultan (Samuel L. Jackson), a conniving and manipulative businessman who also acts as Roper's fight promoter. The Sultan relays some bad news to everyone: The fight was a financial flop. He deduces the reason that boxing events have become far less profitable is because audience members are sick of watching only black boxers fight each other. The Sultan predicts that a white contender, even one without a viable chance of winning, would create a huge payday for all involved in the fight (citing the Larry Holmes vs. Gerry Cooney battle in 1982 and the playing of the race card in that instance as a precedent), and he vows to either find or "create" a white contender in no time at all.

Pug est un gentil garçon et une force de la nature pour qui rien ne compte plus que son chien et sa fiancée. Le voyou Al l'apprend à ses dépens en essayant de voler un baiser à la belle : en colère Pug met seul en déroute Al et toute sa bande de voyous. Au théâtre voisin, Cyclone Flynn, le célèbre boxeur, doit faire une exhibition et affronte tous ceux qui veulent tenter leur chance. Sa récente déconvenue donne l'idée au voyou de présenter Pug comme challenger et partager la prime. Il parvient à convaincre ce dernier d'aller s'inscrire. Mais une fois sur le ring, le combat de rue n'a rien à voir avec le Noble Art et Cyclone Flynn démolit consciencieusement Pug. Sonné et hors de lui, ce dernier se saisit de deux revolvers et entame une course poursuite avec le boxeur professionnel, qui a pris les jambes à son cou à l'extérieur du théâtre. Nos deux larrons sont suivis par les soigneurs, fiancée et spectateurs. Aussitôt alertés par le directeur, les Keystone Cops entrent dans la danse et finissent comme d'habitude par faire les frais de cette histoire en prenant un bain.
