Synopsis
L'histoire se focalise sur les événements d'octobre 1919 où une troupe de marins partisans de la Révolution livre un combat contre les Blancs dirigés par Nikolaï Ioudenitch, non sur mer mais sur terre. Le commissaire Martynov, dépêché pour organiser la défense de Petrograd recrute quelques marins du port de Kronstadt à l'attachement soviétique éprouvé, pour aller à repousser les Blancs. Ces derniers, victorieux dans un premier temps, jettent les prisonniers du haut d'une falaise, une pierre attachée au cou. On a alors un long plan sur les vagues de la Baltique, comme pour nous signifier un retour des choses. Après quelques secondes, l'un des marins, qui avait gardé son couteau, ressort de l'eau et regagne la berge. Il rejoint Kronstadt et prend la tête de la flotte qui débarque là même où ses camarades furent précipités. Les marins montent en haut de la falaise. Les Blancs, en train de lutter contre l'infanterie, sont pris sous un double feu. Leur fuite les mène au bord de la falaise, d'où ils se jettent pour échapper aux Rouges, finalement victorieux.Actors

The film opens on Saturday, June 21, 1941. Sasha Akimov, a 15-year-old musician, and his older brother, Alexander, whose parents were killed in the Spanish Civil War, are serving with the Red Army at the Brest Fortress. Elsewhere, a commissar, Yefim Fomin, discovers he is unable to bring his family to Brest due to a shortage of train tickets. Another officer, Gavrilov, continues to express concern of the readiness of the fort's defenses should an attack come, despite warnings from his friend, Vanshtein, about his statements regarding an imminent war with Germany. That evening, the fortress loses power due to German commandoes.

The film opens with on-screen text stating: "A true story". It is August 1941, and Nazi Einsatzgruppen are sweeping through Eastern Europe, systematically killing Jews. Among the survivors not killed or restricted to ghettoes are the Polish Jewish Bielski brothers: Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), Asael (Jamie Bell), and Aron (George MacKay). S'ils votent contre, elles seront divulguées publiquement. Stupéfaite, Gun hésite à révéler la machination liée à cette intervention illégale. Malgré tout, elle envoie anonymement le mémo à la presse afin de tenter d'empêcher la guerre qui s'annonce inutile et aux conséquences désastreuses. Mais, en choisissant d'exposer cette vaste conspiration politique, la lanceuse d'alerte met en danger sa vie, son couple, sa liberté et son sens du patriotisme. Car sa décision est considérée comme une trahison aux yeux des services secrets britanniques.

In 1982, Ari Folman was a nineteen-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find that he remembers nothing from that period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the reality of which he is unable to clearly recall. In his memory, he and his soldier comrades are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut under the light of flares descending over the city.

The film begins in 1813 after the phase of the Napoleonic Wars known in German as the Befreiungskriege (War of Liberation). The opening scenes show Prussian Landwehr and volunteers marching down the streets of Breslau through enthusiastic crowds. This is followed by a dialogue between King Frederick William III of Prussia and Count August von Gneisenau, in which Gneisenau explains that the siege of Kolberg taught the importance of citizen armies. Ending with the admonition that kings who cannot lead must abdicate, the scene switches to Vienna in 1806 to show the abdication of the last Holy Roman Emperor, Francis II of Austria, whom the script has Gneisenau call "an Emperor who abandoned the German people in their hour of need".

The film opens during the production of War and Peace at Mosfilm Studios in 1964. An elderly Russian noblewoman is set to appear as a film extra until her past comes to light. Although the film's political commissar demands her dismissal since she is a "wife of an enemy of the revolution", director Sergei Bondarchuk is adamant that he needs faces like hers for the production. As the commissar realises the difficulty of identifying her using the file he has, he immediately recognises the elderly woman behind him as the woman he is searching for, while the elderly woman is looking at her own 1910s photo.
