Synopsis
L'histoire se focalise sur les événements d'octobre 1919 où une troupe de marins partisans de la Révolution livre un combat contre les Blancs dirigés par Nikolaï Ioudenitch, non sur mer mais sur terre. Le commissaire Martynov, dépêché pour organiser la défense de Petrograd recrute quelques marins du port de Kronstadt à l'attachement soviétique éprouvé, pour aller à repousser les Blancs. Ces derniers, victorieux dans un premier temps, jettent les prisonniers du haut d'une falaise, une pierre attachée au cou. On a alors un long plan sur les vagues de la Baltique, comme pour nous signifier un retour des choses. Après quelques secondes, l'un des marins, qui avait gardé son couteau, ressort de l'eau et regagne la berge. Il rejoint Kronstadt et prend la tête de la flotte qui débarque là même où ses camarades furent précipités. Les marins montent en haut de la falaise. Les Blancs, en train de lutter contre l'infanterie, sont pris sous un double feu. Leur fuite les mène au bord de la falaise, d'où ils se jettent pour échapper aux Rouges, finalement victorieux.Actors

En juillet 1942, lors de la seconde bataille de Kharkov les défenses soviétiques sont submergées par la contre-attaque allemande. Accompagnées de réfugiés civils, les troupes reculent vers Stalingrad. Parmi les combattants se trouvent le lieutenant Youri Kierżencew, son radiotéléphoniste Anton Valega et Ivan Sedykh, un éclaireur. Pour quelques jours, ils sont hébergés dans la maison d'un ouvrier d'usine des tracteurs de Stalingrad dont la nièce prénommée Lucia travaille dans un hôpital militaire. En compagnie de la jeune femme, le lieutenant Kierżencew fait une promenade le long de la Volga, ils passent près du kourgane Mamaïev. Lucia voit Kierżencew comme quelqu'un de renfermé, peu causant et pragmatique. Lui même avoue que ses centres d’intérêt se sont réduits aux éléments d'organisation militaire tellement que, même en regardant la Lune, il la considère strictement du point de vue stratégique.

Carlo Levi was a painter and writer, but he also had a degree in medicine. Arrested in 1935 by Mussolini's regime for his anti-Fascist activities, he was sent to live in a remote town in southern Italy, in the region of Lucania which is known today as Basilicata. Au Nicaragua en 1979, le journaliste-photographe Russell Price couvre la guerre civile opposant les sandinistes au président Anastasio Somoza. Ses amis, le chef d'antenne Alex Grazier et la journaliste de la radio Claire, l'accompagnent. Au moment où ils arrivent, les sandinistes frappent même jusque dans la capitale, Managua. Au fil des jours, Russell en vient à se poser des questions sur la façon de couvrir cette guerre, lorsqu'il prend conscience de la brutalité de l'armée somoziste vis-à-vis de la population. Lui et Claire sont bientôt approchés par les sandinistes afin de photographier Rafael, leur leader, dont le gouvernement nicaraguayen vient d'annoncer la mort. Rafael est en réalité bel et bien mort, mais les guérilleros veulent démontrer, par une photographie, qu'il est toujours vivant afin de finir la guerre à leur avantage. Après quelques hésitations, Russell accepte et, le lendemain, la photo du chef sandiniste est diffusée dans tout le pays, ce qui déstabilise quelque peu le gouvernement Somoza. Le régime commence à se poser des questions sur la neutralité de la presse. Alex Grazier est bientôt arrêté puis abattu par la Guardia. Russell Price, qui a réussi à photographier l'assassinat, parvient à rendre publiques les photos et le gouvernement américain abandonne toute aide au régime somoziste. Les sandinistes entrent en vainqueurs à Managua et le dictateur fuit le pays.

In the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh during May 1973, the Cambodian national army is fighting a civil war with the Khmer Rouge, a result of the Vietnam War overspilling that country’s borders. Dith Pran, a Cambodian journalist and interpreter for The New York Times, awaits the arrival of reporter Sydney Schanberg at the city's airport but leaves suddenly. Schanberg takes a cab to his hotel where he meets up with Al Rockoff (John Malkovich). Pran meets Schanberg later and tells him that an incident has occurred in a town, Neak Leung; allegedly, an American B-52 has bombed the town.

In 1943 two Belarusian boys are digging in a sand field looking for abandoned rifles in order to join the Soviet partisan forces. Yustin, an old man, warns them not to dig (using sarcasm and reverse psychology). One of the boys, Flyora (Aleksei Kravchenko), finds an SVT-40 rifle. The next day partisans arrive at his house and take Flyora with them, to the dismay of Flyora's mother. She fears that the loss of her son, like his father before him, will lessen her and her daughters' chances of survival.

In 1967, during the Vietnam War, a group of new U.S. Marine Corps recruits arrive at Parris Island, South Carolina, for basic training.
