A naive, rambunctious, overly enthusiastic and socially inept cowboy, Beauregard Decker, and his friend and father-figure Virgil Blessing take the bus from Timber Hill, Montana to Phoenix, Arizona, to participate in a rodeo. Virgil has encouraged the 21-year-old virgin, Beau, to take an interest in "girls." Initially reluctant and frightened of the idea, Beau declares that he hopes to find an "angel" and will know her when he sees her. Making trouble everywhere they go, he continues his bad behavior in the Blue Dragon Café. There he imagines himself in love with the café's singer, Chérie, a talentless but ambitious performer from the Ozarks with aspirations of becoming a Hollywood star. Her rendition of "That Old Black Magic" entrances him and he forces her outside, despite the establishment's rules against it, kisses her and thinks that means they're engaged. Chérie is physically attracted to him but resists his plans to take her back to Montana. She has no intention of marrying him and tells him so, but he's too stubborn to listen.

Hal Carter (William Holden) is a former college football star, adrift and unemployed after army service and a failed Hollywood acting career. On Labor Day (September 5, 1955), he arrives by freight train in a Kansas town to visit his fraternity friend, Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson), the son of a wealthy grain elevator owner, Mr. Benson (Raymond Bailey). À la fin de l'époque victorienne à Londres, l'artiste-peintre Louis Dubedat est atteint de la tuberculose. Sa femme Jennifer, follement amoureuse d'un mari qu'elle idéalise, ne peut se résoudre à le voir disparaître. Elle va demander à l'éminent spécialiste Sir Colenso Ridgeon de tenter le tout pour le tout afin de le sauver. Le docteur a tellement de patients qu'il ne peut traiter en priorité que certains cas extrêmes et Jennifer le convainc (en même temps qu'il est séduit par son charme) en lui présentant des œuvres de son mari en qui le docteur reconnaît un grand artiste. Mais en prenant Louis en charge, le docteur et son équipe découvrent que l'artiste est doublé d'un escroc qui est, de surcroît, bigame, marié à une autre femme qu'il a abandonnée. Le docteur est confronté à un dilemme, entravé, en plus, par les sentiments qu'il éprouve pour Jennifer : soit laisser l'artiste s'éteindre en préservant les illusions de Jennifer, soit tenter de le sauver en dévoilant à celle-ci la bigamie et les autres travers de son mari.

Paul, Walter et Jacques sont trois grands amis quinquagénaires aux caractères très différents. Johnny (Pacino) is a middle-aged man, just released from prison who's looking for a job. He's hired as a short-order cook in a local diner where he meets Frankie, a pretty but emotionally damaged waitress who is trying to move on with her life after getting out of an abusive relationship just a couple years prior to the start of the film. Her only friends seem to be her friendly gay neighbor Tim (Lane) and her fellow waitresses at the diner. Johnny attempts to win Frankie's heart but quickly realizes it will be quite a challenge in this true-to-life romantic dramedy.
