Synopsis
Dans un village soviétique, deux veuves, Alexandra Gromova et Elisaveta Petunina, qui ont perdu pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale tous leurs proches, vivent ensemble dans une maison. Elles entretiennent la tombe des deux soldats qu'elles ont enterrés elles-mêmes en 1941. L'identité des morts est inconnue, seul un fragment d'une photo de piètre qualité tachée de sang a été trouvé sur l'un des corps.Actors

The film is set in New York, based on the incident during defection of Alexander Godunov. Irina (Larisa Polyakova) a part of a Soviet ice dancing tour on a visit to New York along with her husband. When Soviet authorities hear about her husband's defection, they put her on a plane to Moscow. However, U.S. Immigration Service stop the flight insisting that she is being taken out of USA against her will. Irina’s plane to Moscow awaits permission for take-off until a meeting is arranged with her husband at the airport.

The film dwells of the love story in the midst of the Second World War in 1943. A Hutsul girl Annychka finds herself in the middle of hostilities and gets acquainted with a wounded soldier in the forest. Looking after the soldier, she falls in love with him and turns against her boyfriend in the village, who became a Nazi collaborator. Having told her father of the decision to elope with the soldier she drives her father to despair and eventual insanity. The story ends on a tragic note, when the father kills his daughter.
