Oleg Ivanovich Yankovsky (Russian: Оле́г Ива́нович Янко́вский; February 23, 1944 – May 20, 2009) was a Soviet/Russian actor who has excelled in psychologically sophisticated roles of modern intellectuals. In 1991, he became, together with Alla Pugacheva, the last person to be named a People's Artist of the USSR.

Biography

Né dans une famille d'origine aristocratique de Pologne déportée au Kazakhstan (son père ancien officier meurt au Goulag), Oleg imite son frère Rostislav Yankovski qui s'était lancé en 1957 dans la carrière théâtrale en Biélorussie à Minsk. Oleg rejoint le théâtre dramatique de Saratov en 1965. Il entre dans la carrière cinématographique deux ans plus tard, lorsqu'il est retenu pour tourner dans deux films traitant de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

En 1973, il entre au Lenkom de Moscou.

Yankovski a poursuivi une carrière au théâtre et une carrière féconde au cinéma, faisant de lui un acteur classique et en même temps un acteur moderne, incarnant les plus grands rôles du cinéma contemporain soviétique puis russe. Il est apparu dans des adaptations de classiques, comme Ma douce et tendre bête (1977), ou La Sonate à Kreutzer (1987). Il est parallèlement acteur principal au Lenkom dans des mises en scène de Mark Zakharov. On l'a vu aussi dans des adaptations télévisées de pièces de théâtre comme Un miracle ordinaire (1978) et Le baron de Muenchausen (1979). Il obtient le prix d'État de l'URSS pour son rôle dans l'œuvre de Roman Balayan Vols entre rêve et réalité (1984).

À l'étranger, il se fait connaître par ses rôles dans deux films de Tarkovski, Le Miroir (où il joue le père) et Nostalghia (où il tient le rôle principal).

Yankovski dirige le Kinotavr (festival du film de Sotchi) depuis 1993. Il a reçu encore récemment des prix pour sa carrière, en particulier le Nika de la part de l'Académie du Cinéma russe pour le film qu'il a dirigé Viens me voir (2001), ainsi que son rôle dans L'Amant de Valeri Todorovski (2002). Il a joué le comte Pahlen dans Pauvre, pauvre Pavel (2004) et Komarovski dans une adaptation télévisée du Docteur Jivago (2006), dirigée par Alexandre Prochkine. Son dernier rôle est dans Anna Karénine de Sergueï Soloviov, où il joue le mari d'Anna Karénine. Le film sort à la télévision en 2009.

Il est enterré au cimetière de Novodevitchi à Moscou.

In 1955, a group of young Muscovite Komsomol (communist youth) students led by Katerina intercepts illegal stilyagi gatherings in Gorky Park. Perceived as "enemies of society", the stilyagi are forced to flee, with many of them getting caught and their clothing, ties or hair cut by the Komsomol for demonstrative purposes. Mels, a twenty-year-old paragon athletic student and member of the Komsomol, is ordered by Katia to chase one of the escapists, another young girl. However, the girl soon tricks him into believing that she broke her ankle, and then abruptly pushes Mels into a pond, at the same time inviting him to "come spend some time with Polly (Russian: Польза, wordplay on "benefit") on the Broadway".

Fegele Abramovich (Christina Ricci), a Russian Jew is separated from her father (Oleg Yankovsky) as a child in 1927. Her father has travelled to America to seek his fortune and plans to send for Fegele and her grandmother. Before leaving, he sings "Je Crois Entendre Encore" from the Bizet opera Les pêcheurs de perles to her. After her father leaves, the village is attacked and burned in a pogrom. Fegele escapes with the help of neighbours; after many obstacles, she is crowded onto a boat headed for Britain, with only a photo of her father and a coin given to her by her grandmother.

Billy (Marina Zudina), an FX make up artist who does not have the physical ability to speak, is in Moscow working on a low budget slasher film directed by her sister's boyfriend Andy (Evan Richards). On one particular night Billy returns to the set to fetch a piece of equipment for the next day's shoot when she is accidentally locked in the studio. Being unable to speak but having the ability to communicate with her sister Karen (Fay Ripley), Billy makes several telephone calls but is interrupted when she discovers a small film crew working after hours to shoot a cheap porno film. Watching unseen Billy is amused until the performed sex becomes sadistic. When a masked actor pulls out a knife and stabs the actress (Olga Tolstetskaya), Billy reacts and is discovered. She flees pursued by the homicidal film crew.

The events unfold just before the start of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1988. Lieutenant Steklov, son of a high-ranking General, is assigned to Afghanistan, hoping to take part in combat and earn some medals before the war ends. Sgt. Arsionov (Aleksei Serebryakov) combines his combat experience and bravery with brutal hazing of young conscripts back on the field base. Major Bandura`s tour of duty has expired. He is free to go home and reunite with his wife whom he has almost forgot. This means leaving his mistress Katya (Tatyana Dogileva), a nurse in the base's hospital—to a much anticipation from Bandura's superior Leonid (Mikhail Zhygalov) who fell in love with Katya. Anxiety is felt by many characters about the change taking place back in the Soviet Union during the Perestroika. Bandura himself thinks he might not be able to adapt. Katya says that Afghanistan will be remembered as the best part of their lives.
