Winged Victory is a 1944 American drama film directed by George Cukor, a joint effort of 20th Century Fox and the U.S. Army Air Forces. Based upon the play of the same name by Moss Hart, who also wrote the screenplay, the film only opened after the play's theatre run.

Synopsis

Frankie Davis (Lon McCallister), Allan Ross (Mark Daniels) and Pinkie Scariano (Don Taylor) join the U.S. Army Air Forces with hopes of becoming pilots. In training, they befriend Irving Miller (Edmond O'Brien) and Bobby Grills (Barry Nelson). The five friends go through the training process to become pilots, facing success, failure and tragedy.

Major Dan Kirby (John Wayne) arrives at VMF-247 ("Wildcats") as the new commander when everybody in the unit was expecting Captain Carl "Grif" Griffin (Robert Ryan) to take over. Kirby is strict and makes this understood from day one.
