Winning America is a documentary television film about the Canadian band Said the Whale. It follows the band on their first US tour down through California, and then to South by Southwest. It premiered on CBC Television on July 23, 2011. The film was directed by Brent Hodge and Thomas Buchan, and was produced by Brent Hodge, Jon Siddall and Sheila Peacock. It was nominated for a Leo Award in 2012.

Synopsis
The film follows the members of the band Said the Whale as they're about to embark on their first tour in the United States. It starts by introducing the members of Said the Whale, showing that even though they get a lot of radio play and have successful tours in Canada, they don't actually make enough money to live off of their music earnings so they all have separate jobs.Comments

The documentary follows the heavy metal scene in Los Angeles, with particular emphasis on the glam metal subgenre. On pourra légitimement s'étonner de la parution d'un live du Boss, si peu de temps après son (magnifique) DVD de "réunion" à New-York. D'autant que les anciens fans s'en rappelleront : il a fallu lui tirer les vers du nez, à Bruce, pour qu'il daigne sortir son premier live en 1986 ! La surprise est d'autant plus grande que la setlist, à première vue, a quand même certains points communs avec le live de 2001. D'où vient alors la différence? Elle vient naturellement de "The rising", ce fameux nouvel album enregistré avec tout le E Street Band, le premier depuis 1987. Ce genre de réunion à l'arrachée de vieux line-ups, en général, ce n'est pas toujours pour le meilleur ; mais ici c'est du Boss qu'on parle. Et l'homme sait depuis belle lurette comment bien faire les choses.

The film begins by listing the headlining acts of the Super Rock festival held in Japan in 1984: Scorpions, Whitesnake, and Bon Jovi, all of whom have gone on to sell millions of records, except one: Anvil. Despite their ambition, the Canadian band was unable to achieve the same level of success. Instead, singer and guitarist Steve "Lips" Kudlow drives trucks for Children's Choice Catering, delivering food to schools and institutions. Drummer Robb Reiner works in construction. But both would rather be playing on stage at the local sports bar to their small but dedicated group of fans, as shown during a show for Steve's 50th birthday party.
