Synopsis
During the mid-14th century, in Florence, some young people of rich families are fleeing the city haunted by the plague. They take refuge in a large country house, and spend their time telling stories. Every ten stories told in one day, the group of boys elect a king or queen of the day, and he must invent stories, which have various kinds and topics.Actors

1913 en Toscane - Le maître-maçon Bonnano restaure une église, aidé par ses sept fils dont deux, Nicola et Andrea, qui décident d'aller tenter leur chance aux États-Unis. Ils iront de déconvenue en désillusion, jusqu'à ce jour de 1914 où le hasard les mène à San Francisco. Là, le réalisateur David Wark Griffith prépare son nouveau film, Intolérance, et engage deux maîtres-maçons italiens pour en réaliser les décors. Les deux frères se font passer pour eux mais, leur supercherie découverte, se font renvoyer. Ils rencontrent alors deux figurantes de la production, Edna et Mabel, qui les poussent à réaliser une sculpture monumentale en carton-pâte, d'un éléphant. Ils parviennent à la présenter au metteur en scène qui, impressionné, les embauche.

The film is about the life of Luisa Sanfelice, a young member of the Neapolitan nobility who is in love with a republican, Salvato Palmieri. In the wake of the French Revolution a Napoleonic army led by general Jean-Étienne Championnet enters in Naples. Horatio Nelson receives the duty to organise the exile of King Ferdinand to Palermo. After the court has fled the Parthenopean Republic is proclaimed in January 1799. Also Luisa's husband, Cavaliere Luciano Sanfelice, has gone, but she stays. Luisa becomes the symbol of the hatred nobility though she supports the revolution. In June of the same year Naples is taken by the royalist troops conducted by cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo. Ferdinand returns to the town: with his well-known brutality he orders several massacres and the elimination of all opponents. 50000 Neapoletans are left dead. Disregarding the outrage of the population Ferdinand puts Luisa to death on 11 September 1800.

The story, drawn from La masseria delle allodole, the best-selling novel by Antonia Arslan, tells about the Avakian clan, an Armenian family living in Turkey and having two houses. The Avakians feel convinced that the rising tide of Turkish hostility on the horizon means little to them and will scarcely affect their day to day. The Avakians do not pay attention to the warning signs, and set about preparing for a family reunion with the impending visit of two well-to-do sons - landowner Aram, who resides in Turkey, and Assadour, a physician living in Venice. These illusions come crashing down when a Turkish military regiment crops up at the house, annihilates every male member of the family and forces the ladies to trek off into the Syrian desert, where they will be left to rot. With them goes one of the little boys of the family, who was dressed into a girl in order not to be killed. Meanwhile, a handsome Turkish officer (Moritz Bleibtreu) falls in love with Aram's daughter and makes an aggressive attempt to deliver her from certain death, even as the circumstances surrounding him attest to the astounding difficulty of doing so.

Un étudiant en droit, Giovanni, est envoyé par son père à San Gimignano, en Toscane, pour y régler une affaire d'héritage. Là, il rencontre une jeune femme, Eugenia, et en tombe éperdument amoureux. Lorsque la pièce de théâtre est enfin représentée, les propriétaires terriens, gênés par le contenu de celle-ci, font appel à la police pour faire cesser le spectacle. Au cours de l'échauffourée qui suit, Eugenia est grièvement blessée. Giovanni s'efforce, en compagnie d'Enzo, de la maintenir en vie en lui contant la fabuleuse histoire du joueur de flûte. Eugenia se rétablit et Giovanni, pour sa part, décide de retourner chez lui. Des années plus tard, Giovanni est devenu juge et une affaire passionnelle lui rappelle son amour d'antan. Against the backdrop of the Bourbon Restoration, Lombard aristocrat Fulvio Imbriani, a former political extremist who once served under Napoleon, is finally released from an Austrian jail, after a lengthy sentence for his part in the secret Sublime Brotherhood. À la fin du XIX siècle, un anarchiste italien, Giulio Manieri, coupable d'avoir semé la sédition dans un village d'Ombrie, est condamné à mort. Sa peine est finalement commuée en réclusion à perpétuité. En dix ans de solitude, reclus dans sa cellule, Giulio ne cesse (re)penser la « révolution » à laquelle il a tout sacrifié. Or, dix ans plus tard, lors d'un transfert en barque, il croise, justement, une nouvelle génération de révolutionnaires, eux aussi incarcérés : il essaie de leur parler, de se faire entendre et comprendre. Mais le dialogue tourne court, car, le monde et les temps ont désormais changé. Giulio prend alors conscience de la vanité de ses idéaux et de l'inutilité de son combat ; il se laisse engloutir par les flots.
