Set in the summer of 2000, Mona (Clara Khoury), a young Druze woman living at Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, is about to marry a successful Syrian actor. Following the hostilities between Israel and Syria there is now the demilitarised UNDOF zone between occupied Golan and Syria observed by United Nations staff. Crossing of the zone is extremely rare as it is only granted by both sides under special circumstances. It has taken 6 months to obtain permission from the Israeli administration for Mona to leave the Golan. When Mona crosses she will not be able to return to her family on the Golan even to visit. Mona is a bit hesitant also because she doesn't know her husband-to-be.

A Palestinian family living in a small Muslim village in Galilee gathers to celebrate the wedding of one of their daughters, as war rages between Israel and Lebanon. Its many members symbolise a community struggling to maintain its identity, torn between modernity and tradition. In the midst of it all is a forbidden love story between the youngest daughter, Hajar (Hafsia Herzi), who has returned from studying abroad, and her Christian lover (Tom Payne). L'histoire du film débute en 1945, l'année de la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, juste avant la Guerre israélo-arabe de 1948-1949. Une famille juive d'Europe migre vers la Palestine encore mandataire du Royaume-Uni afin d'éviter les persécutions. Le couple de Fania et d'Arieh Oz ne s'entend plus. Tandis qu'Arieh est plutôt confiant pour son avenir, Fania est traumatisée par la guerre et le fait d'avoir dû fuir son pays. Tous les deux ne restent ensemble que grâce à leur fils de 10 ans, Amos. Il découvre la poésie et la littérature selon un certain point de vue, expliqué par sa mère. Au fil du temps, constatant que la nouvelle vie dont elle rêvait ne voit pas le jour, Fania devient de plus en plus triste et finit même par se suicider, laissant à son fils une certaine vision de la littérature qui l'influencera dans ses écrits toute sa vie. L'histoire se termine en 1953, cinq ans après la proclamation de l'État d’Israël, quand Amos, maintenant âgé de 18 ans, s'en va habiter dans un kibboutz.

In New York City, Jess Robin (Neil Diamond), whose real name is Yussel Rabinovitch, is an Orthodox Jewish cantor performing at the synagogue of his imperious father Cantor Rabinovitch (Laurence Olivier). Yussel is married to his childhood sweetheart Rivka (Catlin Adams) and has settled down to a life of religious devotion to the teaching of his faith; as a sideline, he writes songs for a black vocal quartet, "The Four Brothers". One night after Maariv, Yussel is recruited by the group to cover for one of the members who is in trouble with the law and must wear blackface and an Afro wig as it is a strictly all-black venue. The group performs "You Baby" and the engagement is a success, but an audience member (Ernie Hudson) notices that Yussel's hands are white, sparking a riot in which the band is arrested. Cantor Rabinovitch goes to the jail to bail them out but finds there is not a Yussel Rabinovitch there, only a Jess Robin. Yussel explains his use of a stage name, but his father informs him that his singing voice is to be used for God's purposes, not his own. Yussel/Jess decides to relent and do whatever his father wants, at least for now.

Shlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his Christian mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. This woman, who will become his adoptive mother, is about to be airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984. His birth mother, who hopes for a better life for him, tells him “Go, live, and become,” as he leaves her to board the plane. The film tells of his growing up in Israel and how he deals with the secrets he carries: not being Jewish and having left his birth mother.
