Young Toscanini is a 1988 Italian-French English-language biographical film directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring C. Thomas Howell and Elizabeth Taylor. It charts the early career and romances of the conductor Arturo Toscanini in Rio de Janeiro in 1886.
Synopsis
1886. Le jeune Arturo Toscanini, violoncelliste de Parme, auditionne à la Scala de Milan. Mais le jury ne s'intéresse guère à son talent et le renvoie. Furieux, Toscanini est approché par un impresario témoin de l'altercation, Claudio Rossi, qui lui propose de venir au Brésil afin de participer à la première locale de l'opéra Aïda. Egalement pianiste de formation, Toscanini connaît déjà un immense répertoire et accompagne les chanteurs de la troupe au piano. Sur le bateau, après avoir pris froid lors d'une tempête, il fait la connaissance de Sœur Margherita, qui fait partie d'une mission de religieuses en partance pour l'Amérique latine.Actors

The partially fictionalized film is set in 1977, the year in which Callas died, and centers on the making of a movie of Georges Bizet's Carmen. The diva, whose now-ragged voice is well past its prime, is persuaded to star in it by longtime friend and former manager Larry Kelly, who abandoned classical music to become a rock impresario. He insists by lip-synching to her old recording she will recapture her lost youth and leave behind a priceless legacy for her admirers, and his theory is supported by Callas confidante and journalist Sarah Keller.

The film opens in the Paris home of courtesan Violetta Valery, where sheets cover the furniture in dimly lit rooms. Creditors, appraisers, and movers are removing much of the artwork and ornate furnishings. One of them curiously wanders through the rooms, until he comes upon Violetta, bedridden and looking pallid and weak, and he stares at her with undisguised awe. She is startled to see him and follows him to see what he is doing. As she gazes down the long hallway, her delirious mind drifts back to a happier time, and via flashback we are transported to a lavish party she is hosting to celebrate her recovery from an illness. One of her guests, Count Gastone, has brought with him his friend, the young nobleman Alfredo Germont, who has long adored Violetta from afar. She becomes dizzy and retires to her bedroom to recover; he follows her and declares his love. At first Violetta rejects him, telling him love means nothing to her, but she is touched by his concern and offers him a camellia, telling him to return it when it has wilted. He promises to see her the next day.

The story is set in southern Italy and recounts the tragedy of Canio, the lead clown (or pagliaccio in Italian) in a commedia dell'arte troupe, his wife Nedda, and her lover, Silvio. When Nedda spurns the advances of Tonio, another player in the troupe, he tells Canio about Nedda's betrayal. In a jealous rage Canio murders both Nedda and Silvio. Although Leoncavallo's opera was originally set in the late 1860s, Zeffirelli's production is updated to the period between World War I and World War II.

With only a few exceptions, the film follows the same plot as the opera. Iago plots and brings about Otello's downfall by convincing him that his wife Desdemona is engaged in an affair with the young lieutenant Cassio, provoking Otello to murder her in a blind rage. However, in a major change from the opera, Otello kills Iago at the end by throwing a spear at him, while in the stage version he only wounds him with his sword.
