Maiquel (Murilo Benício) is a single, ordinary man living in the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro. After losing a soccer bet to his friends, Maiquel must dye his hair blond. This unusual event in his otherwise mundane life, inspires Maiquel to ask his hairdresser, Cledir (Cláudia Abreu) out to a bar where he is confronted and bullied by a local criminal named Suel (Wagner Moura). He decides to settle the matter by subsequently buying a rifle which he uses to shoot and kill Suel the next day. He does so in front of Suel's girlfriend. Instead of reprimanding Maiquel, most everyone in the neighborhood, including the police, are overjoyed that he has killed off this local pest, and show their gratitude with gifts. With the news of Maiquel's rise to heroism, influential locals hire him to kill others for him, turning him into a full-on hitman. Maiquel's once dull life becomes one filled with drugs, sex, wealth, and violence as he gradually becomes detached from his wife and becomes less of the "ordinary man" he once was. This path of destruction leads Maiquel to become an outlaw on the run. The film ends with Maiquel dying his hair black and running from the police, realizing just how much his life has changed.

Rio de Janeiro, 1886. Actress Sarah Bernhardt performs at the city's Municipal Theater, captivating the local audience enthralled by French culture. The city is at her feet, and even the Emperor Pedro II comes to pay his respects. He confides a secret to her: the disappearance of a precious Stradivarius violin presented by him to the charming widow Baroness Maria Luiza. The actress suggests to the monarch to hire her friend, the legendary British detective Sherlock Holmes, to solve the case. Subsequently, a brutal murder shocks the city, and leaves the police superintendent Mello Pimenta: a prostitute had been killed and mutilated, her ears cut off and a violin cord strategically placed on her body by the perpetrator. The film is a fictional version of the dramatic events of the 1969 abduction of the American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick (played by Alan Arkin) in 1969. Elbrick was taken in Rio de Janeiro by the Revolutionary Movement 8th October (MR-8) with help of Ação Libertadora Nacional (ALN). Gabeira (played by Pedro Cardoso and named Paulo in the film) as a student joins the radical movement after the military takeover of the Brazilian government. He and his comrades, led by Andréia, gradually decided to kidnap the ambassador as a protest, and are shown mostly planning and executing the kidnapping. Paulo is portrayed as "the most intelligent and uncertain of the kidnappers.

Ayant été chassé du domicile familial en raison de ses écarts sexuels, Tieta revient dans son village natal après 25 ans d'absence en compagnie de Leonora, une jeune fille qu'elle fait passer pour la fille de son mari qui vient de mourir. Tieta à la tête d'une jolie fortune se met à combler sa famille et son village de cadeaux nombreux, se débrouillant même jusqu'à y faire installer l'électricité. Sa sœur Perpetua et son père lorgnent lourdement sur la fortune de Tieta qui entre autres projets à celui de construire une maison sur une colline proche, elle se fait aider pour cela par son neveu, séminariste et fini par coucher avec. Parallèlement une idylle nait entre Leonora et le nouveau maire du village, lequel la croit vierge. Tieta voulant faire le bonheur de Leonora explique au maire que la jeune fille n'est pas vierge, qu'elle a un passé, mais que rien ne les empêche de se donner du plaisir. Ayant confiance en son amant Leonora lui révèle la vérité, elle est une employée du bordel tenue à Sao Paulo par Tieta, et les deux femmes se sont mises au vert en attendant qu'une vague affaire de drogue se calme. Le maire est furieux et dénonce Tieta dans tout le village tandis que Leonora fait une tentative de suicide. Le neveu séminariste maintenant dépucelé quitte le village avec une jolie jeune fille au grand désespoir de Perpetua, puis Tieta et Leonra s'en vont à leur tour par le car. Le maire est au désespoir et profite d'une panne inopinée du car pour rejoindre les deux femmes, Léonora descend et ils s'embrassent. Tieta repart seule mais heureuse. Au village une nuit une main anonyme débaptise la rue principale de la ville pour la renommer "rue Tieta de Agreste".
