Le film se déroule en 1838, en plein coeur du conflit entre les habitants français du Bas-Canada et les occupants anglais. À l'automne de la même année, François-Xavier Bouchard et plusieurs de ses compatriotes sont capturés. Jugés par un tribunal militaire, 12 patriotes sont pendus devant la porte de la prison, sous les yeux horrifiés de leurs compagnons. Pendant plusieurs mois, des dizaines d'autres patriotes, eux aussi condamnés à mort, attendent dans l'angoisse une exécution qui ne viendra jamais. Le film est inspiré des journaux authentiques de ceux qui vécurent ces évenements.

Set in the 1940s in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, it tells the story of a young girl living in a coal mining town where the death of men from accidents in "the pit" (the mines) has become almost routine. Margaret MacNeil (Helena Bonham Carter) has already lost her father and an older brother and for her, life alone would be preferable to marrying a mine worker—that is until the charming Neil Currie (Clive Russell) shows up. Against the wishes of her hard-bitten mother (Kate Nelligan) they marry, but before long financial woes lead to his doing what every other uneducated young man does in the town: take a job underground. His death in the mine, along with her younger brother, drives Margaret to a mental breakdown and in her surreal world she decides to create a "special" museum to the memories of all those who have died as a result of the horrific mining conditions.

Au milieu des années 70, le concierge de l'orphelinat religieux pour garçons Saint-Vincent à Terre-Neuve est à l'origine d'une enquête de police qui révèle que de nombreux enfants y sont victimes de sévices corporels et sexuels. Les frères incriminés sont simplement relevés de leurs fonctions, la collusion entre la hiérarchie catholique et différents membres du gouvernement ayant abouti au classement de l'affaire. Quinze ans plus tard, un inspecteur rouvre le dossier et le gouvernement nomme une commission d'enquête. Les enfants abusés, devenus des adultes traumatisés, viennent enfin témoigner publiquement de leur calvaire.

Toni (Nardi) is the director of a staged rendition of Othello in Montreal. It is a pet project of his, financed by his mafia uncle. Unbeknownst to him, the audiences are also rounded up and paid by the same uncle. Some of them have seen every performance of this tragic play, and are understandably bored, so when the backstage romantic events of the actors result in absurd situations onstage, the audience is delighted. There are a huge number of romantic situations going on in this film at the same time. One of them involves Gaston (Lapointe), a somewhat world-weary jazz musician, and Florence (Marleau), a glamorous middle-aged woman who has been pining for him for years. Another involves to members of the musician's jazz trio. Yet another involves the play's Desdemona, Soledad (Laurier), the girlfriend of the man playing Othello, who can't keep his hands off his dresser. She is also Florence's niece.
