Set in both Sicily and mainland Italy, the film follows the adventures of a man nicknamed Mimi (Giancarlo Giannini). Mimi is a poor labourer who is pressured by his employers to vote for the mafia candidate in a local election. Frustrated by the system and assured that the ballot will be secret Mimi votes for the communist representative instead. However he is fired and assured he will never work again as the ballot was not secret. Disgusted Mimi flees to Turin.

Maddalena Ciarrapico arrives in New York City from Italy to get married and bringing with her a gift of mortadella (large Italian pork sausage) from her co-workers from the sausage factory where she used to work, for her fiancé. But she is refused permission to bring the mortadella into the country because of the ban on meat that may contain food-borne diseases. Set in Rome and its surroundings, the film tells in a frighteningly realistic, ruthless and grotesque the evil of two powerful men of Italy in the seventies: a Director of illegal buildings (Vittorio Gassman), extremist fascist, and an upright judge, cynical looking in part to the Italian law (Ugo Tognazzi). Both can not stand each other, given the contrasts between the two men in any social, political and philosophical. Everyone hates each other and would like to delete it, but just because of the bad example that the two men give power to the people, many Italians are adversely affected because of cheating and rudeness of the fascist manufacturer and the communist magistrate. The director Dino Risi underlines the misdeeds and the weakness of the Italian people to react accordingly, by focusing on the story of these two men who are each other's opposite of the net.

Paola (Cassini) is in a deteriorating marriage with Bernard (Galeazzo Bentivoglio). Lors d'une réception à Turin, Paola, mal mariée avec le riche industriel Marco qui collectionne les aventures féminines, fait la connaissance du séduisant Alberto Pegasano, un ami de son mari venu d'Argentine pour affaires.
