Azad (Jean-Paul Belmondo), Ralf (Robert Hossein) and 2 other accomplices rob a suitcase of emeralds from a rich Greek citizen, M.Tasco. When Abel Zacharia (Omar Sharif), the Athenian police chief, surprises Azad's car in front of Tasco's house on the night of the robbery, he decides to let Azad and his team go, hoping he could retrieve the emeralds for himself. Follows a chase between Azad and the corrupt cop through Athens' streets which culminates to the final scene which will be later borrowed by Witness in 1985.

Daniel Chetman, ancien membre d’une bande de barbares des rues, s’est rangé et travaille comme ouvrier. Un soir, il décide de venir en aide à une jeune Chinoise violée par Matt Hagen, le chef de son ancienne bande, qui se considère comme un homme d'affaires. Matt règne sur la rue par la violence et la terreur, alors, quand Chet lui fait cet affront, il le considère comme un homme gênant, mais hésite à le tuer en souvenir du "bon vieux temps, unis comme les six doigts de la main". Son gang est plus fort que jamais, et il ne s'inquiète pas plus que de raison, se contentant de passer Chet à tabac dans le sous-sol aménagé, qui lui tient lieu de repaire. Désormais, Chet sait que cette rue lui sera fatale, il ne lui reste que deux choix : déménager comme sa femme et ses amis le voudraient, ou se battre, seule façon de garder la tête haute, même si ce choix le conduit à nouveau dans ce passé violent et sordide qu'il voudrait refouler.
