Après s'être fait tabasser dans un bar, Mark Hogancamp est resté plusieurs jours dans le coma. À son réveil, il est frappé d'amnésie. Il va alors se créer un monde imaginaire, Marwen, un village belge fictif durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La création de ce village en miniature devient une obsession. Comme une auto-thérapie, Mark invente des lieux imaginaires qu'il peuple avec des poupées représentant principalement des femmes de son entourage et de son passé. Dans ce monde imaginaire, son alter ego Captain Hogie côtoie ainsi la sorcière belge Deja Thoris, GI Julie ou encore Caralala. Tout cela lui redonne la force physique et mentale nécessaire pour le retour à la réalité : Mark doit se rendre au procès de ses agresseurs.

In 1973, French street performer Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is trying to make a living in Paris with juggling acts and wire walking, much to the chagrin of his father. During one performance, he eats a hard candy which was given to him by an audience member and hurts his tooth. He visits the dentist and, while in the waiting room, sees a picture in a magazine of the Twin Towers in New York City. He analyzes the photo and decides to make it his mission to walk a tightrope between the two buildings. Meanwhile, he is kicked out of his parents' house by his father, citing his lack of income and the fact that he's a street performer. Philippe returns to the circus that inspired him to wire walk as a child and practices in the big top after hours, but is caught by Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), whom he impresses with his juggling skills. While performing one day, Philippe meets a beautiful woman and fellow street performer named Annie (Charlotte Le Bon) and they begin a romantic relationship. He also explains that although he didn't know it at the time, she was his first "accomplice". He tells Annie about his dream to walk between the towers of the World Trade Center and she supports him and gives him a perfect place to practice at her music school. Philippe meets a photographer named Jean-Louis (Clément Sibomy) and befriends him, becoming Philippe's official photographer and second accomplice in his "coup".

Airline pilot captain Whip Whitaker (Washington) uses cocaine to wake up after a night of very little sleep in his Orlando hotel room. He pilots SouthJet Flight 227 to Atlanta which experiences severe turbulence at takeoff. Copilot Ken Evans (Geraghty) takes over while Whip discreetly mixes vodka in his orange juice and takes a nap. He is jolted awake as the plane goes into a steep dive. Unable to regain control, Whip is forced to make a controlled crash landing in an open field and loses consciousness on impact.

In 2012, an alien criminal, Boris the Animal, a Boglodite, escapes from a maximum-security prison on the moon and arrives on Earth, bent on taking revenge on Agent K, who shot off his left arm and captured him in 1969. In 1843, Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter and miserly old moneylender at a London counting house holds everything that embodies the joys and spirit of Christmas in contempt. Ignacio was the son of a Scandinavian Lutheran missionary and a Mexican deacon, who both died while Ignacio was young. Now a cook for the Oaxaca, Mexico monastery orphanage where he was raised, Ignacio dreams of becoming a luchador, but wrestling is strictly forbidden by the monastery. Ignacio cares deeply for the orphans, but his food is terrible due to being unable to obtain quality ingredients, which he cannot afford. Ignacio feels unfulfilled due to his desire to wrestle and his disdain for most of his orphanage duties, and struggles over his feelings for Sister Encarnación, a nun who teaches at the orphanage. One night, while collecting donated tortilla chips for the orphans, Ignacio is robbed of the chips by a street thief named Steven. After a fight ensues between the two, Ignacio decides to disregard the monastery's rules and become a luchador in order to make money. He convinces Steven to join him with the promise of remuneration if they win, and the two join a local competition as tag partners.
