One day, her father has a heart attack, when Moorthy and Uma rush him to the hospital the roads were blocked by a local political party. Her father unfortunately dies, the angry Moorthy clashes with the political party leader Sigamani (Rajan P. Dev) in public. Later, Govindan joins his party and stands in election as well as Moorthy. In the meantime, Moorthy and Uma get married. The corrupt politician Sigamani orders to kill Govindan and blames the innocent Moorthy. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

The film begins with Shantidevi (Vijayashanti) being announced as the number one Industrialist in India. Shantidevi is a rich and arrogant lady and rules her company with an iron hand. Enters Krishnan (Rajinikanth) who is a kind-hearted man who works as a welder in Mumbai and comes to Chennai to see his mother. Krishnan and Shantidevi meet at the airport and their first meeting ends on a bitter note. Krishnan learns that his mother is suffering from paralysis. Krishnan quits his job in Mumbai and decides to stay in Chennai to take care of his ailing mother. His family doctor recommends Krishnan to meet a renowned business man for his job. Krishnan goes to meet the business man and on the way an elderly man, Viswanathan, is beaten up by several men. Krishnan helps him and takes him to a hospital and finds out that Viswanathan is none other the business man whom he was going to meet. Krishnan is asked to go to the factory only to discover that factory belongs to Shantidevi who happens to be Viswanathan's daughter. Shantidevi refuses to hire Krishnan but later due to her dad's compulsion she recruits Krishnan.

In the past, Jeevadurai (Jaiganesh), an honest police officer, was killed by Govindan (Vijayakumar). Thereafter, Rajaratnam (Sathyaraj), Jeevadurai's son, was brought by D.I.G Pandidurai (Sivaji Ganesan). Few years later, Rajaratnam is married to Devaki (Rupini) and they have a son. Like his father, Rajaratnam becomes a police officer. In Shanthi Nagar, Govindan who is now known as Kocha controls the city and the people cannot face him and his henchmen. The film begins by showing Rajni as Balu, a lavish spendthrift with a cavalier attitude towards life. Born to a rich father Chandrasekhar (played by VS Raghavan), Rajni has a rampant and aggressive behaviour and gets into confrontations wherever he perceives injustice. Worried about Rajni's behaviour, his father decides to send him to his friend and ex-militaryman Gangadharan's (played by Sendhamarai) village, to work for him for one year with a condition that Rajni will not reveal that he is the son of Chandrasekhar. Rajni slowly gets accustomed to the village life and learns to work hard and develops a good relation with Gangadharan and his family. During his stay, he spars with an arrogant rich girl, Sumathi (Madhavi). Madhavi assuming Rajni to be a poor villager tries to humiliate him and Rajni responds in kind. Eventually they both fall in love. In a triangular story line, Gangadharan's daughter played by Sulokshana, also falls in love with Rajni, but learns he is in love with Madhavi. A dejected Sulokshana agrees to marry a man (Sathyaraj) chosen by her father. Madhavi's father (played by Vinu Chakravarthi) who had agreed to get her married to his partner's son rescinds the proposal on Madhavi's request. This enrages the villainous partner (Srikanth) and he kidnaps Madhavi to marry her by force to his son Nizhalgal Ravi. Rajni rescues her and leaves her in the custody of Satyaraj and Sulakshana. However Sathyaraj betrays his trust and turns her over back to Srikanth and Nizhalgal Ravi. In a final fight sequence, Rajni rescues Madhavi and returns her to her father. Rajni then leaves the village after learning hard work, discipline and many other good virtues from Gangadharan. The final scene shows Madhavi and her father at Rajni's father house discussing marriage for Madhavi. Madhavi refuses but soon realizes that she is actually in Rajni's house and to everyone's surprise Rajni clad in a full suit walks down the stairs when the credits start rolling.
