The film turned out to be a failure at box office.
Synopsis
Moorthy (Vijayakanth) is a lorry driver, who lives with his mother Ram Aatha (Manorama) and often confronts the criminal Govindan (Anandaraj). Moorthy and Uma (Ravali) fall in love with each other. One day, her father has a heart attack, when Moorthy and Uma rush him to the hospital the roads were blocked by a local political party. Her father unfortunately dies, the angry Moorthy clashes with the political party leader Sigamani (Rajan P. Dev) in public. Later, Govindan joins his party and stands in election as well as Moorthy. In the meantime, Moorthy and Uma get married. The corrupt politician Sigamani orders to kill Govindan and blames the innocent Moorthy. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.Actors

Kaalai is the do-gooder always ready with a helping hand. Literally, because when women are pushed around and shoved, it is Kaalai who rushes with his arms readily extended to support them. Raghavan (Sarathkumar) and Velu (Vadivelu) work as cooks in a non-veg hotel. Raghavan loves Geetha (Kiran) who is the daughter of a rich man (Vijayan), but her father is against this love and insults him as a poor man. Raghavan challenges that he will be rich in a year. There is a subplot in the story, for Meenakshi (Sharmili), a daughter from a rich family; she is the apple of the eye of the family. Meenakshi ran home with her lover Raju, who worked as a driver to her house. He tells that his friend Dinesh will help them. However, Raju escaped because he saw a bad dream where he is killed by her family as if it will happen in reality. Due to that he vanishes. Raghavan understood her plight and helps her.

The story begins with a group of government officers who come to list the number of devastated houses. The officers promised them to give a big amount to build their house but in exchange for a little amount to register their name. So the illiterate villagers, who wants to make easy money, demolish their house. The officers turn out to be frauds. The village panchayat president (Vinu Chakravarthy) knows that the villagers will not interfere in his decision until they are uneducated. Sivaraman, a new school teacher, tries to change their custom and the children are happy to learn at school. Soon, Sivaraman has trouble with the village head.

Vaanavaraayan (Rajinikanth) plays the role of a feudal chieftain, adored and respected by his village people. He lives with his grandparents (M. N. Nambiar & Manorama). Following his advice, they abstain from voting in the elections and instead, pool the money given by the candidates to get themselves some basic amenities. Vallavaraayan (Napoleon) is his arch enemy. Their enmity is further sharpened when Vaanavaraayan wins the hand of Vaitheeswari (Meena), whom Vallavaraayan had also wished to wed. So Vallavaraayan convinces the priest at the temple to mix a poison in the holy water that Vaitheeswari drinks. As a result she becomes incapable of conceiving. But surprisingly, Vaitheeswari soon becomes pregnant-though she has pretended with the help of the mid-wife (S. N. Lakshmi), to do so to uphold her husband's honor. She takes poison and kills herself unable to bear the grief of being incapable of giving her husband a child and on her deathbed makes Vaanavarayan swear to take Ponni (Aishwariya) as his wife. Vaanavarayan however refuses until Ponni agrees to marry Sembattai (Thalapathi Dinesh)- Vallavarayan's hechman-who abandons her to Vallavarayan's vice. Infuriated Vaanavarayam attacks Vallavarayam and spares his life after giving him a sermon on how to win the heart of people.

Chinnaiya (Sarath Kumar) is a faithful servant in the house of a rich man (Vijayakumar). The rich man is angry with his elder daughter (Sitara), who yearns to mend their relationship. His second daughter, Prabhavathy (Simran Bagga), who arrives from America, falls in love with Chinnaiya but after gaining his trust, accuses him of attempting to rape her. Turns out that she did this to try to unite her sister's family with her father and send Chinnaiya out since it was Chinnaiya's father who killed her mother. So Chinnaiya is kicked out of the house. Meanwhile Muthaiya (also Sarath Kumar), Chinnaiya's father, is released from jail.

Aruna Arunachalam (Manorama) is an estate owner in Ooty and she is in trouble with Thiruttani (Anandaraj), who keep illegally some hectares of her estate. Murugan (Prabhu)won the Mr. Madras award and he also worked as a model. His mother (Lakshmi) advices him to find a decent job. He is later appointed by Aruna to protect her and she promises to keep him permanently. Aruna Arunachalam has two granddaughters : Meera (Sukanya) and Devi (Vineetha). Murugan investigates in Thiruttani's area and he finds Ganja plantation. Murugan then shows the proof to the police and they arrest Thiruttani (Anandaraj). Although, Murugan accomplishes his mission, Aruna dismisses him. So Murugan takes challenge to continue to work here. Murugan makes things rough on Aruna's family. Murugan's mother is worried about her son, she comes there and she faints after seeing Aruna. Murugan's mother is in fact Aruna's daughter. In the past Murugan's mother married with a poor labourer and Aruna didn't accept it. Meera and Devi fall in love with Murugan. Murugan makes a big drama to reduce Aruna's ego. In the meantime, Thiruttani escapes from jail and kidnaps Aruna. Murugan saves his grandmother and Aruna apologizes his daughter.
