Biography

Frank Bracht fait carrière à la Paramount Pictures, où son premier film comme monteur est La Sentinelle du Pacifique de John Farrow (avec Brian Donlevy et Macdonald Carey), sorti en 1942. Suivent un documentaire de Frank Capra et Joris Ivens (1945), puis deux courts métrages musicaux (1946 et 1948).

Le deuxième des quarante-cinq longs métrages américains qu'il monte est La Mère du marié de Mitchell Leisen (1951, avec Gene Tierney et John Lund). Ultérieurement, citons Le Plus Sauvage d'entre tous (1963, avec Paul Newman et Melvyn Douglas), Hombre (1967, avec Paul Newman et Fredric March) et Traître sur commande (1970, avec Sean Connery et Richard Harris), tous trois réalisés par Martin Ritt, Drôle de frimousse de Stanley Donen (1957, avec Fred Astaire et Audrey Hepburn), Les Ambitieux d'Edward Dmytryk (1964, avec George Peppard et Carroll Baker), ou encore Nevada Smith d'Henry Hathaway (1966, avec Steve McQueen et Karl Malden).

The movie is set in the Deep South of the United States prior to the American Civil War. Falconhurst is a run-down plantation owned by widower Warren Maxwell (James Mason) and largely run by his son, Hammond (Perry King). Hammond and a friend go to a brothel where both men choose to have sex with virgin black women. Hammond chooses Ellen (Brenda Sykes). Hammond and Ellen watch as Hammond's friend abuses and rapes his choice, claiming that she likes it. Hammond asks Ellen if this is true, and she says no. Hammond then gently has sexual intercourse with Ellen.

The story follows a young teacher, Pat Conroy (played by Jon Voight), in 1969 assigned to isolated "Yamacraw Island" off the coast of South Carolina and populated mostly by poor black families. He finds out that the children as well as the adults have been isolated from the rest of the world and speak a dialect called Gullah, with "Conrack" of the novel's title being the best they can do to pronounce his last name. The school has only two rooms for all grades combined, with the Principal (Madge Sinclair) teaching grades one through four and Conroy teaching the higher grades. Conroy discovers that the students aren't taught much and will have little hope of making a life in the larger world.
