Biography

Au cinéma, où il exerce principalement, Howard Shoup débute comme chef-costumier en 1937 et contribue à cent-soixante-quatorze films américains (dont des westerns) jusqu'en 1967 — produits entre autres par Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer et Warner Bros. —, souvent pour les seuls costumes féminins.

Parmi ses films notables, citons Les Aventures de Tarzan à New York (1942, avec Johnny Weissmuller et Maureen O'Sullivan), Lily Mars vedette de Norman Taurog (1943, avec Judy Garland et Van Heflin), La Blonde du Far-West de David Butler (1953, avec Doris Day et Howard Keel), Ce monde à part de Vincent Sherman (1959, avec Paul Newman, Barbara Rush et Alexis Smith), Gypsy, Vénus de Broadway (Gypsy) de Mervyn LeRoy (1962, avec Natalie Wood et Rosalind Russell), ou encore Luke la main froide de Stuart Rosenberg (son dernier film en 1967, avec Paul Newman et George Kennedy).

Candy Philips (Susan Sennett) is a 16-year-old girl who is kidnapped on her way home from her Catholic school. Her three kidnappers include Eddy (Vince Martorano), his partner Jessie (Tiffany Bolling), and Jessie's brother, Alan (Brad David), who bury her alive in a Southern California field. They give her a pipe for air, expecting they will soon gain a ransom from her father. Unbeknownst to them, Candy's burial is witnessed by a young mute child, Sean Newton (Christopher Trueblood), who tries to tell his intolerant parents, Dudley (Jerry Butts) and Audrey (Bonnie Boland), about what he saw.

Based on the 1962 novel of the same name, Youngblood Hawke is about a Kentucky truck driver, (James Franciscus), who moves to New York City with dreams of becoming a hot-shot writer. Almost immediately he meets editor Jeanne Green, (Suzanne Pleshette). She sees great promise in Hawke's writing and falls for the handsome Kentuckian while helping him put together his first book deal. His first novel is moderately successful, but is soon transformed into a Broadway play by a has-been stage actress. Jeanne discovers that Youngblood has an effect on a great many women, so she takes a new job at a new publishing company. Soon after, Hawke's second novel is heralded and he becomes the toast of the town. He then has an affair with a married socialite. His third novel bombs and is also panned by critics. Hawke's financial state declines and he has to move back to Kentucky. While in Kentucky working on his next book, he contracts pneumonia just before realizing that Jeanne was his true ideal woman.
